About The Position

The Bindery Operator 2 (Slitter Operator) sets up, adjusts, and operates auxiliary binding machines and may operate automatic adhesive binding machines. The role involves inspecting equipment for safety, coordinating multiple machine stations, and directing a crew through production. The operator monitors quality, output, and productivity while completing finished printed materials.

Requirements

Thorough knowledge of setting up, adjusting, and operating bindery equipment, including its procedures, capabilities, and limitations, for standard and specialized binding, folding, collating, and cutting.
Comprehensive knowledge of how different paper weights, sizes, kinds, and colors behave in machines, including identifying conditions such as excessive moisture or curling that may require adjustments.
Ability to use standard and specialized tools and devices to adjust and maintain bindery machines.
Skill in making difficult adjustments to powered machines using hand tools and specialized tools.
Skill in operating complicated bindery equipment such as folders, cutters, collators, stitchers, drills, and binding or gluing machines.
Ability to read and interpret written instructions describing the number and sequence of machine operations and required dimensions.

Responsibilities

Set up, adjust, and operate a variety of auxiliary binding machines.
Inspect equipment for safety issues.
May operate automatic adhesive binding machines that process collated sheets or signatures into completed books, magazines, or catalogs.
Adjust machine stations to coordinate their operation.
Direct the crew through all aspects of production.
Monitor quality, output, and productivity.
