About The Position

The Bindery Operator 2 sets up, adjusts, and operates auxiliary and automatic bindery machines used to turn printed sheets into finished products such as books, catalogs, manuals, directories, and magazines. Equipment may include cutters, folders, collators, stitchers, drills, binding and gluing machines, perfect binders, and mailing or decorating devices. The operator coordinates multiple machine stations, inspects equipment for safety issues, directs the crew through production, and monitors product quality, output, and productivity.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret work orders and job specifications describing bindery requirements and machine-operation sequence.
Ability to maintain dimensional accuracy and independently select appropriate equipment.
Ability to calculate distances, clearances, and fits when combining machines.
Skill in using standard and specialized tools to adjust and maintain bindery machines.
General knowledge of complex bindery machines, including fully automatic binding machines, multiple-station collators, and multiple folding units.
Thorough knowledge of the setup, operating requirements, procedures, capabilities, and limitations of one or more bindery machines.
Knowledge of quality and machining requirements for coated and uncoated paper stocks.
Skill in setting up and adjusting machines for finishing operations, including adjustments for paper weight, color, machinability, and quality and prevention of machining impressions.

Responsibilities

Set up, adjust, and operate auxiliary binding machines and related attachments.
Set up and operate automatic bindery machines with multiple functions and stations.
Operate automatic adhesive binding machines (perfect binders), when required.
Adjust machine stations to coordinate their functions and produce finished products.
Inspect equipment for safety issues.
Direct the crew through all aspects of production.
Monitor quality, output, and productivity.
