About The Position

Oakland Enrolls is seeking bilingual community members to serve as Family Ambassadors for the 2026-27 enrollment season. This role involves reaching out to families, guiding them through the Oakland Enrolls common application process, and supporting outreach events. The goal is to help families, particularly those with limited access to information or who speak languages other than English at home, make informed choices about public charter school options. This is a paid contract position for individuals with existing connections to Oakland families.

Requirements

  • Clear, patient communicator with strong verbal skills in English.
  • Strong verbal skills in at least one additional language (Spanish, Mam, Arabic, Chinese, or Vietnamese).
  • Trusted member of the Oakland community with existing relationships among families with school-age children.
  • Self-motivated and reliable; able to manage own schedule and follow through on commitments.
  • Comfortable making phone calls, sending texts, and doing basic data entry on a smartphone.
  • Existing relationships with Oakland families and seen as a reliable resource in their community.
  • Personal experience with Oakland’s public school enrollment process.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with preschools, faith communities, community outreach, or K–12 enrollment is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Reach out through personal networks (neighbors, faith communities, parent groups, social media) to identify families exploring school options.
  • Help families learn about the charter schools available through Oakland Enrolls and feel confident making a choice.
  • Guide families step-by-step through the Oakland Enrolls common application, including account creation, school selection, understanding requirements, and submission before deadlines.
  • Follow up with families to ensure applications are completed.
  • Conduct conversations in families' primary languages whenever possible.
  • Track families using a unique ambassador referral code and log outreach activity in CRM software.
  • Table at community events, school fairs, Head Start presentations, and preschool visits.
  • Speak with attendees in their language, answer questions about charter school options, collect sign-up information, and encourage families to apply.
