About The Position

As a Bicycle-Pedestrian Safety Engineer with the Department of Transportation, you will be part of a mission-driven team improving roadway and trail safety. This role allows you to apply engineering skills while working closely with partners, municipalities, and the public. You will help identify concerns, develop solutions, and support safer travel for people of all ages. Take on a rewarding role that directly supports safer and smarter movement across the state. This position supports roadway and trail safety by applying engineering principles, reviewing crash data, and coordinating bicycle and pedestrian programs. You will play an important role in identifying problems, recommending improvements, and guiding safe transportation planning.

Requirements

• Successful completion of the Civil Engineer Trainee training program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration)
• Five years of civil engineering experience in the appropriate specialty, and an Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists
• Four years of civil engineering experience in the appropriate specialty, and an engineer-in-training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists, and an associate’s degree in civil engineering technology or a closely related engineering discipline
• One year of civil engineering experience in the appropriate specialty, and a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a closely related engineering discipline
• Possession of a valid driver’s license

Responsibilities

• Review crash data and apply engineering principles to recommend roadway improvements
• Assess proposed safety projects and suggest solutions based on proven practices
• Support district bicycle and pedestrian programs and review crossing requests
• Participate in site visits to evaluate pedestrian crossings and roadway safety concerns
• Investigate safety complaints and provide information to municipalities and the public
