This is an advanced professional transportation planning position responsible for leading multimodal mobility initiatives, develop and implement pedestrian and bicycle programs, review development proposals, coordinate with regulators, improve transportation safety, and coordinate projects. Work requires professional-level proficiency in the theories, principles and practices of bicycle and pedestrian safety, as well as urban planning, which is usually gained through degree granting schools or equivalent training and experience. May assign, train, and monitor the work of others. This position involves ongoing coordination with federal, state and regional transportation planning organizations, local planning agencies, nonprofits, interdepartmental staff, elected leaders, private consultants, and the public to design, prioritize and implement projects and programs for nonmotorized travel modes. Contacts with others require skills in understanding and influencing people and are important in implementing urban planning projects, discussing and resolving work-related issues and problems, and presenting and defending recommendations and decisions. The work is clearly defined in that tasks are covered by substantially diversified procedures and specialized standards, requiring the use of judgment in search of solutions or new applications. Work is performed primarily in an office environment though the employee will be required to make field visits to project sites in order to evaluate projects or gather statistical data. Operates bicycles, motor vehicles, and standard office equipment including a computer and programs such as ArcGIS, Adobe Illustrator, Acrobat Pro, and Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams), as well as web page editing software. The physical demands consist mainly of sitting at a workstation for extended periods of time, occasionally lifting and moving light objects or file boxes, visiting field sites, and conducting walk audits. Work is performed under limited supervision wherein the work assignments are varied, and the worker plans and organizes the work, and determines priorities based on established procedures, practices, and precedents.
