BESS PV Engineer

SunStrong Management, LLC•,

About The Position

The BESS/PV Engineer is the owner-side technical authority for SunStrong Management’s solar PV and battery energy storage delivery portfolio. The role reviews designs, evaluates contractor engineering and test results, and establishes the technical positions that inform Project Managers and gate decisions across company-originated, repowering, remediation, and inherited in-flight projects. The Engineer works with EPCs, OEMs, utilities, authorities having jurisdiction, and field service partners. The position independently evaluates and recommends technical dispositions but does not direct EPC means and methods, approve change orders, or make gate decisions. When technical assessments and project forecasts disagree, both positions are reported and the gap is escalated to the Director. The Engineer reviews PV and BESS designs, engineering submittals, safety plans, commissioning procedures, and performance tests; establishes fleet standards and review checklists; and supports technical oversight, acceptance testing, performance validation, failure analysis, remediation, safety, compliance, and project turnover. The role maintains traceable technical records and verifies that operating teams receive complete, accurate asset documentation. Project Delivery reports into Commercial Operations, with the stated goal of accepting projects to standards that allow long-term operation. SunStrong Management offers comprehensive benefits, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, and a 401(k), as well as competitive compensation. Employment is contingent on successful completion of a post-offer/pre-placement drug test, a medical examination if required for the role, and verification of application information and qualifications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering; a mechanical, power, or related engineering discipline may be considered with relevant experience.
  • Five or more years of solar PV and/or battery energy storage experience in design, owner’s engineering, commissioning, or performance engineering.
  • Working command of PV and BESS system design, including string and central inverter architectures, DC- and AC-coupled storage, medium-voltage collection, protection, and controls.
  • Working knowledge of NEC Articles 690, 705, and 706; IEEE 1547 and 2800; NFPA 855; UL 9540 and 9540A; and utility interconnection requirements.
  • Ability to read and interrogate electrical single-lines, protection schemes, civil and structural drawings, and equipment specifications.
  • Direct experience commissioning and capacity- or performance-testing PV and BESS, including independent recalculation of test results.
  • Proficiency with PVsyst or equivalent and AutoCAD or Bluebeam; familiarity with ETAP, SKM, or PowerFactory sufficient to review power-system studies.
  • Demonstrated written precision for producing technical positions that support warranty, claim, and acceptance decisions.
  • Current OSHA 30 and NFPA 70E awareness, or ability to obtain them within ninety days.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license; an EIT with a defined path to licensure is also considered.
  • Data analysis experience in Excel, Python, or SQL.
  • Experience with multiple BESS platforms and EMS or plant-controller integration.
  • Experience with repowering, remediation, or inherited in-flight construction.
  • NABCEP certification.

Responsibilities

  • Lead technical reviews of PV and BESS design packages against contracted scope and SSM standards, including electrical, protection, controls, civil, and structural interfaces.
  • Verify design-basis assumptions and their consistency with performance guarantees.
  • Review short-circuit, protection coordination, arc-flash, and grounding studies against the equipment actually procured.
  • Review BESS safety designs against applicable codes, standards, test data, and AHJ requirements; confirm test data applies to the installed configuration.
  • Provide technical input to operability reviews, including O&M access, fleet equipment standardization, monitoring architecture, protection, spares, and maintainability.
  • Author and maintain fleet equipment standards, reference design details, and engineering review checklists with Portfolio Management and Field Service.
  • Review submittals, RFIs, and engineering change requests and provide reasoned technical dispositions.
  • Define technical content of Inspection and Test Plans, including hold and witness points, acceptance criteria, and required records; witness factory and site acceptance tests as assigned.
  • Evaluate nonconformances and recommend dispositions, distinguishing documentation defects from defects in installed work.
  • Evaluate the technical basis of change order requests and provide the assessment to the Project Manager and Project Controls.
  • Review equipment selection and substitution requests against fleet standards, warranty terms, serviceability, spares availability, and OEM service coverage.
  • Reconcile as-built conditions with design records and ensure drawings are corrected when they do not match field conditions.
  • Support technical assessments of inherited in-flight construction, including equipment condition, installed configuration, and surviving test records.
  • Review commissioning plans, procedures, and test protocols for PV and BESS equipment and controls; recommend acceptance or return with comments.
  • Witness assigned commissioning activities, including inverter and PCS startup, BESS energization and first charge, relay testing, and utility witness testing.
  • Independently recalculate PV capacity and performance test results and BESS capacity, efficiency, ramp-rate, response-time, and availability results against contracted protocols.
  • Verify EMS and plant-controller behavior against interconnection requirements and offtake obligations.
  • Validate monitoring end to end with the Portfolio Manager, including points-to-points, alarms, and continuous clean data over the validation window.
  • Produce post-completion performance analyses at 30, 90, and 180 days.
  • Define technical scopes for repowering and remediation, including equipment replacement, DC/AC rebalancing, BESS augmentation, and retrofit implications.
  • Perform and document root-cause analyses of equipment failures, underperformance, and recurring faults.
  • Provide technical substantiation for warranty, performance-guarantee, and insurance claims in support of the Project Manager.
  • Analyze fleet performance data and route recurring failure modes into design standards and contractor and equipment selection.
  • Track product safety notices, recalls, code-cycle changes, and platform field history; recommend fleet responses.
  • Verify compliance with NEC, IEEE, UL, NFPA, AHJ, and utility requirements.
  • Support BESS emergency-response plans, hazard-mitigation analysis, and first-responder coordination.
  • Provide engineering input to JHAs, PEC/LOTO requirements, and energization sequencing, including stored-energy hazards.
  • Exercise stop-work authority when design or installed conditions create an imminent hazard.
  • Support incident and near-miss investigations with independent technical analysis.
  • Maintain traceable technical records for assigned projects, including design basis, review comments and dispositions, test records, and approved deviations.
  • Verify the completeness, legibility, and attribution of turnover documentation and reject incomplete submissions rather than backfilling them.
  • Provide equipment serial numbers, firmware versions, and configuration baselines to the equipment register as construction data becomes available.
  • Participate in lessons-learned reviews and incorporate findings into design standards and contractor selection.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, vision, and life insurance.
  • 401(k).
  • Competitive compensation.
