About The Position

BlueWave is seeking an experienced Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) Project Manager to support the development and execution of solar and energy storage projects. This role sits on the Development team and is responsible for managing BESS scope from early-stage project development through construction readiness and handoff to execution teams. The BESS Project Manager will serve as the primary owner of storage-related project coordination, ensuring that system design, vendor selection, permitting inputs, interconnection requirements, and commercial assumptions are aligned and de-risked prior to construction. This role works cross-functionally with Solar Development, Engineering, Interconnection, Legal, EPC partners, OEMs, and internal execution teams to ensure storage projects are technically sound, financeable, and deliverable. The ideal candidate brings a strong understanding of utility-scale or DG-scale energy storage systems, experience managing complex project schedules, and the ability to translate technical detail into clear development decisions. Candidates must be based in either the greater Boston area or the greater Albany area. Candidates based in Boston or the greater Boston area will be expected to work from BlueWave's Boston office 2-3 days per week. Candidates based in New York will work remotely with monthly travel to BlueWave's Boston office.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Energy Systems, Construction Management, or a related field required
  • 5-7+ years of experience managing energy storage, solar, or renewable energy projects, with direct involvement in BESS required
  • Strong understanding of BESS technologies and system configurations
  • Demonstrated experience managing multi-disciplinary project teams and external partners
  • Familiarity with development-stage requirements including permitting, interconnection, EPC coordination, and project finance readiness
  • Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards (NEC, NFPA, UL, IEEE) related to energy storage
  • Strong organizational, communication, and stakeholder management skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced development environment
  • Willingness to travel periodically to project sites and partner locations

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for storage-related coordination across internal teams, EPCs, OEMs, engineers of record (EORs), utilities, and other external partners
  • Lead and coordinate storage system design development, including system architecture, equipment selection, and integration approach (AC-coupled, DC-coupled, standalone)
  • Support OEM and vendor evaluation and selection in coordination with Engineering, Procurement, and Development leadership
  • Request, review, and manage storage-related technical documentation (spec sheets, layouts, single lines, UL listings, installation and O&M manuals) to ensure consistency and readiness for permitting, interconnection, and financing
  • Coordinate storage inputs required for permitting, interconnection applications, land use approvals, and environmental review
  • Manage and lead all required permitting activities including state, federal, and local approvals for project financing and construction
  • Lead community engagement efforts and additional outreach to involved third-party stakeholders and all AHJs
  • Manage storage-specific schedules, milestones, risks, and budgets during the development phase
  • Support constructability reviews and readiness assessments prior to notice to proceed (NTP)
  • Partner with EPCs and execution teams during pre-construction and commissioning planning to ensure a smooth handoff
  • Identify and proactively resolve development-stage risks related to technology selection, site constraints, code compliance, or utility requirements
  • Stay current on energy storage technologies, safety standards, market trends, and regulatory developments impacting project development
  • Participate in site visits as needed to support development diligence, pre-construction reviews, and commissioning coordination
  • Support site identification and origination efforts to deliver new projects to the pipeline
  • Manage and lead all required real estate agreements and support land owner relationships as the main point of contact
  • Work with internal project finance team to ensure accurate and consistent economic underwriting of all project proformas; assist with ongoing financing needs and diligence required across all stages of development
