About The Position

The Behavioral Emergency Response Team (BERT) Technician - BH assists the BERT Nurse in providing quality psychiatric care to patients who are hospitalized outside of Behavioral Health units with psychiatric/emotional disorders. The BERT Technician responds to urgent and emergent patient needs on the medical floors experiencing behavioral health crisis. The BERT Technician rounds on patients daily and ensures environment is safe and monitors constant observers for compliance with required documentation requirements. This position performs a variety of paraprofessional nursing duties in providing care to psychiatric patients.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent.
  • 2 plus years of healthcare related experience or enrolled in nursing school or social science program.
  • In lieu of HS plus experience, Associate Degree in health care, psychology or related field.
  • Current State of Texas registration (EMT) or current certification from a national registry as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) within 1 year of hire.
  • Certification in Non-Aggressive Crisis Management; must be obtained while in orientation and maintained throughout employment.
  • Current JPS recognized Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and must be maintained throughout employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate Degree in health care, psychology or related field.
  • 1 plus years of Acute Psychiatric patient care experience.

Responsibilities

  • Responds to Behavioral Health emergency codes within the established timeframe and collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to ensure appropriate management of patients.
  • Assists the BERT Nurse with direct patient care tasks/interventions toward patients at risk for agitation or psychiatric crisis.
  • Ensure close observation process is being followed as ordered by the physician and required documentation is completed according to departmental policy and procedures.
  • Rounds on psychiatric patients on medical units and validate completion of environmental checks to ensure safe work environment.
  • Collaborates and contributes in educational events (orientation, skills fair, etc.) for constant observer staff across the network.
  • Serves as a behavioral health liaison and resource in the specialized care of psychiatric patients admitted medically through monitoring, communication, immediate interventions, staff education, and support.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality at all times on or off premises.
  • Completes hand off communication with interdisciplinary team during rounding, post-code response, and at shift change.
  • Attends scheduled case reviews and treatment team meetings when consulted and/or appropriate.
  • Participates in investigation of unexpected outcomes and performance improvement for the network for care of the patient outside of Behavioral Health units in psychiatric crisis.
  • Assists the BERT RN with the development and implementation of patient safety programs throughout the network, including evaluation of current best practices for care of the patient outside of Behavioral Health units in psychiatric crisis.
