About The Position

The Behavioral Specialist supports campers’ social-emotional well-being by guiding positive interactions among peers and counselors, helps defuse challenging behaviors, and provides one-on-one assistance to campers who need extra support. This role works closely with counselors and camp leadership to create a safe, inclusive, and fun environment for all campers. The Behavioral Specialist also facilitates conflict resolution, models healthy communication skills, and implements strategies that promote positive behavior and personal growth. Overnight Camp employment is seasonal with dates of employment from May-August. Employment will be at Camp Tuckaho in Troy, Missouri. This position lives on site for the duration of the overnight camp program.

Requirements

  • Meets GSUSA membership requirements and attains the minimum age of 21
  • Abides by national and local Girl Scout policies, standards and procedures and American Camp Association standards and procedures
  • Has successful experience working with groups of children
  • Has demonstrated leadership, good judgment, maturity, flexibility and ability to maintain positive attitude
  • Has energy, stamina and the ability to maintain patience and enjoy group living outdoors
  • Strong swimming skills required
  • Experience working with children ages 6-18
  • Knowledge of neurodivergence
  • Knowledge of child development
  • Ability to diffuse challenging behaviors
  • Valid state driver’s license, proof of insurance, and a driving record that is acceptable to our insurance carrier.
  • Is required to talk and hear, stand, and walk, and is frequently very active which often requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, and crouching.
  • Is required to reach with hands and arms
  • Is required to drive/operate an automobile
  • Must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds

Nice To Haves

  • Has strong outdoor living skills (or willingness to obtain skills) and the ability to teach outdoor skills to campers
  • Degree or experience in special education, social work, or related field

Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 support for campers who need extra support
  • Provide campers and counselors with conflict resolution skills
  • Mediate and diffuse conflict between campers
  • Promote continued positive peer interactions using restorative justice strategies
  • Assist campers regulate emotions
  • Provide campers with coping skills
  • Provide social emotional lessons to units
  • Assists with general office duties as assigned
  • Sustains an environment which supports physical and emotional safety for campers and staff.
  • Establishes and maintains good relationships with campers.
  • Assists with camp closing and completes other closing tasks as delegated
  • Assists with camp set up and preparations prior to the arrival of campers to ensure a prepared, welcoming environment for campers and parents each session.
  • Assumes check-in duties as delegated
  • Reviews unit roster and Camper Information Forms prior to the arrival of campers, maintains confidentiality of information, and assists in ensuring campers see health services staff as scheduled.
  • Set a good example to campers and others in regard to general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.
  • Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.
  • May live in a unit with campers as needed
