About The Position

We are seeking a Behavioral / Restraint & Time Out (RTO) Subject-Matter Expert to provide the behavioral and regulatory content expertise behind statewide professional-learning programs that help K-12 educators de-escalate challenging student behavior and safely reduce the use of restraint, time out, and isolated time out.

Requirements

  • BCBA, school psychologist, special-education behavioral specialist, or equivalent, with demonstrated experience supporting K-12 students with significant behavioral needs.
  • Current certification in a recognized crisis-prevention/de-escalation model (e.g., CPI/Nonviolent Crisis Intervention, Ukeru); certified-trainer status strongly preferred.
  • Direct, current knowledge of state restraint/time-out laws, documentation, and reporting requirements, and of policy efforts to reduce these practices.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior work with a state education agency (e.g., ISBE) or school districts on RTO policy, reduction plans, or compliance.
  • Experience designing or delivering adult professional development for educators.
  • Familiarity with PBIS and MTSS frameworks.
  • Comfort working within an LMS / e-learning delivery model.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as content authority for curriculum on crisis de-escalation, behavior management, trauma-informed and restorative practices, and the safe and lawful use of restraint and time out.
  • Ensure all training content is technically accurate and compliant with applicable state RTO statutes and regulations (e.g., Illinois Public Act 102-0339 and ISBE rules).
  • Develop and review realistic classroom scenarios, case studies, and assessment items reflecting real student-behavior situations.
  • Advise on recognizing physical and emotional distress during a restraint and on de-escalation alternatives that reduce RTO use.
  • Co-facilitate or provide SME credibility for in-person and virtual workshops and communities of practice.
  • Support continuous-improvement and equity review of the program's behavioral content.
