About The Position

This position is a member of the Behavior Health Team that is responsible for providing support to Student Life Trainers in monitoring and intervening with student behavior. This includes organizing team meetings, assisting in the development of program goals and the subsequent implementation strategy to achieve those goals. The employee will organize activities which proactively address student behavior needs. In addition, the employee assists during crisis situations, documents behavior and consults with team members and the psychologist. The employee will work closely with the academic BPT to design and implement developmental educational activities for use during residential times, and respond to any crisis.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in mental health or child development program from an appropriately accredited institution which includes a six-months practicum/internship in a similar setting and one year of the above experience (one year of the above experience may be substituted for the practicum); or
  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of instruction experience, two years of which must have been in instructional work requiring goal writing and application of behavioral management techniques at the level equivalent to the Educational/ Developmental Assistant or Health Care Technician; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting in the design, implementation, and documentation of external motivation systems which provide daily or weekly incentives for all students.
  • Planning and facilitating structured, proactive skill development activities that address relevant topics that encourage appropriate behavior.
  • Working with students who have difficulty maintaining appropriate behavior. This could be on an emergency basis or on a regular schedule. These activities can include discussing alternatives to problem behavior, practicing relaxation techniques, and/or assisting the student in maintaining a daily journal.
  • Provide a model for others that demonstrates supportive interactions, interpersonal behavior and appropriate participation in all academic and social activities of daily living.
  • Provides crisis intervention assistance when necessary.
  • Obtain and maintain certification and expertise in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention. (NCI)
  • Attend training activities each year that relate to crisis intervention and behavior support.
  • Understand and demonstrate a calm, non-confrontational approach when dealing with students and staff.
  • Work as a team member to develop and implement strategies to ensure successful completion of program goals.
  • Document all involvement in a crisis and assure this documentation is completed before the end of that working day.
  • As needed, works one-on-one with students to resolve or prevent problem behavior from occurring.
  • Observe and collect data regarding student behavior for students who have been identified as having behavior difficulties or who are in need of additional support.
  • Regular communication with staff psychologist and supervisor regarding these observations.
  • As needed, attend psychiatric or other necessary consultations to present the data collected.
  • Participate in staff meetings, Individual Education Plans (IEPs), or psychiatric appointments as scheduled.
  • Meet with teachers, residential life staff, mental health therapists and/or parents to discuss relevant behavior issues.
  • Establish good working relationships with staff and professionals.
  • Assist in monitoring students during off-campus activities as well as with students who are not permitted to attend off-campus activities.
  • Work closely to develop activities and workshops to foster independent living skills.
