About The Position

Provides supportive care to Emergency Department patients under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse or physician. This role involves assisting with patient assessments, examinations, and treatments, while conscientiously supervising patients to ensure their safety and well-being. The technician will also manage daily program activities, including patient transport, admissions, discharges, and recreational activities. A key aspect of this role is utilizing de-escalation techniques to manage patients experiencing behavioral problems or in crisis, interacting respectfully and maintaining professional boundaries. Effective communication and teamwork are essential for contributing positively to staff morale and promoting quality patient care. The position also includes assisting with patient transport, tracking patient whereabouts and behaviors, providing coverage for staff absences, conducting searches for contraband upon admission, inspecting rooms and common areas, and maintaining continuous visibility to enhance safety perceptions. Assistance may also be required during 'Code Strong' situations for de-escalation and patient restraint if necessary.

Requirements

  • BLS certification required.
  • High School or equivalent education.
  • Communicate in English and Spanish fluently.

Nice To Haves

  • EMT, Paramedic and/or Medical Assistant license, preferred.
  • Graduation from a foreign medical and/or Medical Assistant program preferred.
  • Up to 3 years of ER Technician experience preferred.
  • Crisis Prevention Intervention training within first 3 months of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Provides supportive care to patients under direct supervision.
  • Assists Registered Nurse and physicians with assessments, examinations, and treatment.
  • Supervises patients in the Emergency Department, emphasizing safety and well-being.
  • Assists in assuring daily program activities: transports patients, admissions and discharges, and supervises recreational activities.
  • Uses de-escalation techniques to resolve and address patients with behavior problems or in crisis.
  • Interacts appropriately with patients, showing respect while maintaining professional boundaries.
  • Communicates effectively with other staff members, demonstrating teamwork and contributing to positive morale and quality patient care.
  • Safely transports patients on campus and during transfers.
  • Tracks patient whereabouts and behaviors, redirecting as necessary.
  • Helps with coverage of vacations and sick time.
  • Conducts searches of client bags upon admission, confiscates contraband, and secures it, notifying appropriate personnel.
  • Randomly inspects rooms, common areas, and hallways.
  • Provides continuous visibility and rounding throughout assigned areas to promote safety.
  • Provides assistance in 'Code Strong' to de-escalate situations and assist with restraining patients if needed.
