About The Position

Southwest Virginia Community Health Systems, Inc. (SVCHS) is seeking a compassionate and experienced Behavioral Health Supervisor to lead the integration of behavioral health services within a primary care setting at our Bristol Community Health Center location. This is a hybrid position eligible for up to 2 days per week remote work. This position combines clinical practice, team leadership, and care coordination. The Behavioral Health Supervisor provides behavioral health assessment and outpatient treatment to children, adolescents, adults, and older adults, supervises the Behavioral Health Care Manager, and works closely with primary care providers to address patients’ behavioral health and medical needs through an integrated care model. A fully licensed behavioral health provider is preferred. However, candidates who are actively working toward independent licensure under an approved supervision arrangement may be considered.

Requirements

• Master’s degree or higher in social work, counseling, psychology, marriage and family therapy, or another qualifying behavioral health discipline from an accredited institution.
• Clinical experience providing behavioral health assessment and treatment is required.
• Current independent Virginia behavioral health license, such as Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), Licensed Clinical Psychologist, or another applicable clinical license, is preferred.
• An applicant who is eligible for Virginia licensure and actively completing the requirements for independent licensure under an approved supervision arrangement may be considered.
• Candidates must remain in good standing with the applicable licensing board and comply with all supervision, documentation, and scope-of-practice requirements.
• Any required professional liability coverage, registrations, certifications, and continuing education must be maintained throughout employment.
• Knowledge of behavioral health assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, crisis response, and evidence-based interventions.
• Understanding of integrated behavioral health and the relationship between physical health, mental health, substance use, and social needs.
• Ability to assess and treat patients across the lifespan.
• Strong clinical judgment and the ability to respond appropriately to urgent or high-risk situations.
• Effective supervisory, coaching, communication, and conflict-resolution skills.
• Ability to collaborate with primary care providers and multidisciplinary teams.
• Strong organizational, time-management, and clinical documentation skills.
• Ability to maintain professional boundaries and protect confidential information.
• Cultural humility and the ability to work effectively with patients from diverse backgrounds.
• Proficiency with electronic health records and standard workplace technology.

Nice To Haves

• Experience treating patients across multiple age groups, including children and adults, is strongly preferred.
• Experience in integrated behavioral health, primary care, community health, or a Federally Qualified Health Center is preferred.
• Previous supervisory, team-lead, or program-coordination experience is preferred.
• Experience working with medically complex, underserved, rural, or vulnerable populations is beneficial.

Responsibilities

• Provide behavioral health screening, assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and outpatient therapy.
• Deliver individual, family, and group behavioral health services within the provider’s education, credentials, and scope of practice.
• Provide age-appropriate services to patients across the lifespan, from children through older adults.
• Evaluate patients for behavioral health concerns, functional limitations, safety risks, and appropriate levels of care.
• Provide crisis assessment, safety planning, referrals, and care coordination when clinically indicated.
• Help patients reduce symptoms, strengthen coping skills, and manage behavioral or emotional concerns associated with chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, chronic pain, and hypertension.
• Establish measurable treatment goals and monitor patient progress and outcomes.
• Connect patients and families with appropriate community, specialty behavioral health, substance use treatment, and social support resources.
• Manage and support the effective integration of behavioral health services at the assigned site.
• Collaborate with primary care providers, nursing staff, care management staff, and other members of the interdisciplinary care team.
• Assist primary care providers with recognizing, assessing, diagnosing, and treating behavioral health concerns within an integrated primary care environment.
• Provide timely behavioral health consultation and recommendations to primary care providers.
• Conduct same-day exam-room consultations when the Behavioral Health Care Manager is unavailable or when a patient presents with elevated clinical or safety concerns.
• Participate in interdisciplinary treatment planning, case consultation, team meetings, and population health initiatives.
• Promote coordinated, patient-centered care through timely communication and appropriate follow-up.
• Identify opportunities to improve patient access, clinical workflows, service quality, and behavioral health outcomes at the site.
• Provide direct supervision, guidance, and performance oversight to the Behavioral Health Care Manager.
• Establish clear expectations and support the Behavioral Health Care Manager’s professional development, accountability, and effectiveness.
• Monitor behavioral health workflows, referrals, documentation, follow-up activities, and coordination of services.
• Serve as a behavioral health resource for clinical and administrative staff.
• Support the implementation of evidence-based practices, organizational policies, and quality-improvement initiatives.
• Communicate operational, clinical, or patient-safety concerns to appropriate leadership.
• Complete accurate, timely, and clinically appropriate documentation in the electronic health record.
• Maintain treatment plans, progress notes, assessments, referrals, and other required clinical records.
• Protect patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA, applicable behavioral health confidentiality requirements, professional ethics, and SVCHS policies.
• Practice within the limits of professional education, training, licensure status, supervision agreement, and scope of practice.
• Participate in required training, quality-improvement activities, audits, and organizational meetings.
