About The Position

Behavioral Health Specialist II Bradley Hospital A Brown University Health Entity As Rhode Island’s largest health system and private employer, Brown University Health is committed to clinical excellence and devoted to our mission of delivering health with care. Bradley Hospital is hiring a Behavioral Health Specialist II to support the therapeutic milieu and provide advanced care to children and adolescents within our inpatient and partial programs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a Human Services field preferred; other education/experience may be considered.
  • 6 months–1 year of direct childcare experience with similar behavioral health populations.
  • Current Bradley Hospital Safety‑Care Certification.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to learn role‑related skills.
  • Ability to provide care across the lifespan with awareness of developmental and cultural considerations.
  • Ability to remain calm during crises, make quick rational decisions, and prioritize patient safety.
  • Ability to meet physical requirements, including: – Lifting up to 50 lbs – Blocking/deflecting aggression – Physically holding patients using approved methods – Bending, squatting, kneeling – Escorting patients as needed – Occasional short‑distance running – Frequent standing and walking

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe, structured, and therapeutic milieu as delegated by the Charge RN, reporting any variations immediately.
  • Function independently in demonstrated areas of competence, delivering advanced childcare interventions.
  • Utilize safe and effective crisis‑management techniques consistently.
  • Take initiative in suggesting improvements to enhance the quality of milieu care.
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of trauma‑informed care and maintain an empathetic, nonjudgmental approach with children and families.
  • Organize therapeutic unit activities and support BHS I staff in learning and implementing these routines.
  • Provide guidance, monitoring, and role‑modeling to less‑senior staff.
  • Assist in orienting new BHS I employees under the direction of the Clinical Nurse Manager.
  • Communicate assertively and respectfully with appropriate team members regarding concerns or conflicts.
  • Provide daily feedback to the Charge RN regarding patient behavior changes and milieu needs.
  • Demonstrate enhanced clinical expertise and may be assigned specialized responsibilities by nursing leadership.
  • Support other clinical programs across the hospital as needed.
