About The Position

The Roanoke City Sheriff’s Office is seeking caring and compassionate Behavioral Health Case Managers (BHCM) who are interested in working with adults within a correctional facility. As a BHCM, you will be working with detention center residents who have been diagnosed with behavioral or mental health disorders/illnesses. As a BHCM, you will be responsible for providing education programming concerning the resident’s specific condition, monitoring their adherence to clinical treatment plans, and providing feedback to licensed mental health professionals regarding the resident’s progress while incarcerated. You will also be responsible for pre-release planning by connecting our residents with resources to ensure continuity of care and maintain their rehabilitative progress upon their release. This position does not entail diagnosing nor treating mental health disorders or conditions in a clinical setting. This position is solely intended to educate detention center resident’s about their diagnosis/condition, to help them maintain compliance with prescribed/recommended treatment, and to assist in planning their release to ensure a successful transition from the detention center back into society. Requirements

  • 1 year of work experience regarding pre-release planning and coordinating
  • Demonstrable experience working with individuals with behavioral/mental health disorders/illnesses
  • Knowledge of case management methods, techniques, and application
  • Demonstrable experience conducting interviews, assessments, and documenting observations
  • Demonstrable ability to exercise good judgment in evaluation situations and making decisions
  • Demonstrable experience conducting group or individual education programming
  • Possess the ability to manage multiple cases at once in a high-pace work environment
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); related experience and/or training in prerelease coordination, group/individual educational programming, and case management.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret journals, reports, and legal documents.
  • Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from citizens, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community orally and in writing.
  • Ability to effectively present information to management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
  • Ability to resolve conflicts.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables when working collaboratively toward a common issue or resolution.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with licensed mental health professionals regarding individual’s treatment needs
  • Provide individual or group therapy
  • Educates residents and staff members regarding behavioral/mental health management
  • Assesses resident’s compliance with treatment and provides support/encouragement as required
  • Interviews residents to assess their situational needs prior to release
  • Identifies and connects residents with external resources to ensure a successful transition upon release
  • Planning for crises and helping residents develop coping mechanisms
  • Submitting applicable documentation as required regarding the progress of assigned residents
