About The Position

Sierra Vista Hospital is seeking a Behavioral Health Admission Nurse (Full-Time) for the Intake Department. This role involves working in a behavioral health setting as part of a dedicated team of healthcare professionals serving patients. Sierra Vista Hospital, a 171-bed psychiatric care facility in south Sacramento, has been providing clinical expertise for emotional, behavioral, and addiction problems since 1986. The Behavioral Health Admissions Nurse supports the department by following established nursing protocols for admissions. This includes answering inquiry calls, scheduling assessments, performing psychiatric assessments for individuals presenting for assessment, providing clinical summaries and recommendations, consulting with psychiatrists, and referring individuals to the appropriate level of care based on psychiatrist orders. The role also involves providing community referrals, taking telephone orders from admitting MDs, performing initial medical screenings through referring ERs, and potentially handling initial insurance pre-authorization for admitted patients within 24 hours. Staff are also responsible for maintaining an organized and clean department through auditing, data entry of referrals, re-stocking documents, and filing. Cross-functional training may be required to enable seamless work throughout the facility.

Requirements

  • Minimum associates Degree from an accredited program and an RN license, required.
  • A minimum of six (6) months direct medical and clinical experience as a licensed RN required.
  • RN license.
  • CPR Certification required.
  • Complete knowledge of crisis intervention techniques.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferably in a psychiatric or mental health setting.
  • Direct experience in patient assessment, family motivation, treatment planning, and communication with external review organizations preferred.
  • ER experience with psychiatric patients with demonstrated knowledge acceptable.

Responsibilities

  • Support the department using established nursing protocol for all possible admissions.
  • Answer inquiry calls.
  • Schedule assessments.

  • Provide clinical summary and recommendation based on findings.
  • Consult with the psychiatrist.
  • Refer individuals to the appropriate lowest level of care based on the psychiatrists orders.
  • Provide community referrals as indicated and desired by the individuals.
  • Take telephone orders from admitting MDs.
  • Perform initial medical screening through referring ERs.
  • Responsible for initial insurance pre-authorization of admitted patients within 24 hours.
  • Assist in maintaining an organized and clean department by auditing and data entry of referrals, re-stocking documents and forms and filing as time permits.
  • May be required to work overtime and flexible hours.
