About The Position

The behavioral aide's primary role is to support Emily's safe participation in the Haven room while helping her engage in activities specially designed for her. Presently, we have a corner area blocked off for her to keep her away from other teenagers to keep everyone safe. The aide will work in collaboration with Haven coordinator, Naliah Lavender, to implement established support strategies that promote a positive and successful experience. Emily is severely autistic and can be self-injurious and aggressive to others. Their family has been with the Tuscaloosa campus since the launch in 2015. The behavioral aide will not provide medical care, behavioral therapy, or other clinical services. The role is limited to providing individualized support that enables Emily to participate as safely and successfully as possible in the Haven environment.

Nice To Haves

• Experience working with individuals who are severely autistic
• Experience with self-injurious and aggressive behaviors
• Familiarity with visual supports, redirection, and sensory regulation techniques
• Ability to recognize early signs of dysregulation
• Ability to implement de-escalation strategies
• Knowledge of Haven ministry policies and procedures, including emergency response protocols

Responsibilities

• Providing continuous one-to-one supervision and support throughout the Haven Friendship Group service for Emily Whatley
• Assisting Emily with transitions between activities and in her specific space.
• Utilizing proactive support strategies, including visual supports, redirection, sensory regulation opportunities, and other individualized techniques identified by Emily's family and the Haven leadership team.
• Recognizing early signs of dysregulation and implementing agreed-upon de-escalation strategies to reduce the likelihood of behavioral escalation.
• Helping maintain the safety of Emily, other participants, Dream Team, and teammates during ministry activities.
• Collaborating with Haven leadership and Dream Team to communicate observations and ensure consistency in support strategies.
• Following all Haven ministry policies and procedures, including emergency response protocols, as applicable.
• Weekly touch base during the week between Haven Coordinator, Susan Pannell and the behavioral aide
