About The Position

The Behavior Technician role involves following a person's care plan, completing documentation accurately and timely, and collecting data to drive positive behaviors. Responsibilities include assisting individuals with daily living activities such as meal planning, grocery shopping, housekeeping, cooking, organizational skills, financial management, and self-care. The role also focuses on supporting decision-making skills, empowering individuals to be involved in their community, and coaching them through behavioral or emergency situations. Maintaining positive working relationships with colleagues, individuals served, and their care teams is essential. Adherence to policies regarding vulnerable adult and child abuse, HIPAA, and confidentiality is required. Additional cross-functional duties may be assigned as necessary.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED + 3+ years of progressive experience in behavioral, residential, or mental health settings
  • Age 21+
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
  • Ability to pass MN DHS background study with fingerprinting
  • Ability to complete and demonstrate competency in required 245D training
  • Demonstrated ability to consistently implement behavior support plans with fidelity under supervision
  • Strong understanding of behavioral principles (e.g., function of behavior, reinforcement strategies)
  • Proven de-escalation and crisis intervention skills, including appropriate use of trained physical interventions when necessary
  • High-level documentation skills: accurate, objective, and timely behavioral data and service notes
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining alignment with team direction and supervisory guidance
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain professional boundaries
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Commitment to ethical practice, confidentiality, and person-centered care
  • Proficient with basic technology (EHR systems, email, Microsoft Office)

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a 245D or HCBS setting
  • Hands-on experience implementing behavior support plans (BSPs/BIPs)
  • Experience with structured data collection and documentation
  • Familiarity with person-centered and trauma-informed approaches

Responsibilities

  • Follow the person's care plan and ensure all applicable documentation related to them is completed timely and accurately, such as shift notes or medication administration reports
  • Collect accurate data to drive positive behaviors as part of the person's care plan
  • Provide problem-solving assistance and build confidence in person served by assisting with activities such as meal planning, grocery shopping, housekeeping duties, cooking, organizational skills, financial management, and self-care
  • Advocate for, support, and empower individuals served by providing general skill training where the skill will be used
  • Support development of decision-making skills and informed choices in all aspects of daily living, including selection of service providers, goals, location, home decor, leisure activities, roommates, and/or personal possessions
  • Support individuals’ desires to be involved in their community by transporting them to their intended destinations via company vehicle
  • Coach individuals served through escalations in behavior or mood, or through emergency situations
  • Maintain positive working relationships with teammates, Designated Coordinator, other MN Care Services staff, people served, as well as their responsible party and/or care team
  • Adhere to the Vulnerable Adult and Child Abuse and Neglect Policies and Regulations, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) privacy policies and maintain confidentiality of all information pertaining to people served, their families, and MN Care Services employees
  • Other cross-functional duties in or out of position scope, as necessary
