About The Position

Hands of Heartland is expanding its services and is seeking compassionate, caring, and dependable individuals to join their team as Behavioral Support Specialists (BSS). This role involves working directly with individuals with developmental disabilities who may exhibit challenging behaviors, providing support in both home and community settings to help them achieve personal goals and lead fulfilling lives. The position requires a high level of professionalism, reliability, and respect, as the specialist will be assisting with daily living tasks, promoting independence, and ensuring the health and safety of those supported.

Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license and clear driving record.
  • Reliable transportation and current automobile insurance.
  • Ability to pass all registry and background checks.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Ability to handle a variety of situations and personalities.
  • Must maintain confidentiality and protect individual rights.
  • Ability to always project a caring and professional image.
  • Proven skills in communication, observation, problem solving, and time management.

Nice To Haves

  • One year of experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities with behavioral challenges or caring for a person in a healthcare setting.

Responsibilities

  • Create a safe, positive, and encouraging atmosphere for the people supported.
  • Transport individuals to and from day programs and community outings.
  • Provide services to address the wants and needs of people with developmental disabilities, including supporting personal goals and teaching daily skills.
  • Assist with activities of daily living such as feeding, bathing, dressing, and grooming.
  • Ensure necessary supplies like groceries and personal care items are in stock.
  • Reinforce therapies, including speech, behavioral support, and physical therapy.
  • Administer medications and other medical treatments as delegated by an HOH nurse.
  • Maintain knowledge of each person’s specialized needs.
  • Ensure each individual’s rights are protected and they are treated with dignity and respect.
  • Complete documentation accurately and in a timely manner, including plan data, behavior data, community integration logs, assessments, funds requests, mileage logs, and maintenance/supply forms.
  • Keep the residence (interior and exterior) and resident personal space clean, organized, and tidy.
  • Complete all other duties as assigned.
