About The Position

The Behavior Specialist will be responsible for supporting students with challenging behaviors, including those with Autism Spectrum Disorders, Emotional Disturbance, and other behavioral needs. This role involves collaborating with staff, developing and implementing behavior intervention plans, collecting and analyzing student data, and providing coaching and professional development to staff and families. The specialist will also work directly with students to build positive relationships and reinforce positive behaviors, and will respond to behavioral crisis situations. The position requires adherence to state statutes, school board policies, and regulations, as well as maintaining accurate records and attendance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in related fields such as Social Work, Psychology, Education, or Mental Health Services.
  • Expertise in the field and knowledge of Autism Spectrum Disorders, Emotional Disturbance, and/or other challenging behaviors.
  • Experience working in public schools, Preschool.
  • Experience with analyzing behaviors that could facilitate Functional Behavior Assessments and behavior plans.
  • Knowledge of positive behavior interventions and supports.
  • Non-violent crisis intervention and support (CPI) certified.
  • Ability to work with an ethnically and educationally diverse group of students, parents, and staff.
  • Maintains prompt and regular attendance.
  • Demonstrates the ability to maintain positive professional working relationships with others.

  • Ability to lift at least 20 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to endure prolonged standing, walking, sitting, occasional reaching above the head or the shoulders, bending, squatting and kneeling.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze behaviors to facilitate Functional Behavior Assessments and behavior plans.
  • Develop and implement management and/or behavioral interventions with appropriate district approvals.
  • Maintain appropriate records and provide guidance for teachers and other staff in the implementation of behavioral interventions.
  • Provide coaching and professional development to staff on behavior interventions and supports.
  • Participate in planning, placement, and/or parent meetings.
  • Train staff and/or family members directly on implementation of behavior support plans.
  • Collect and analyze student behavioral data to provide a more prescriptive approach to behavior interventions.
  • Build relationships with students during one-on-one and/or small group sessions, providing nurturing, caring, and positive reinforcement.
  • Monitor and observe student behaviors inside and outside the classroom setting.
  • Respond to and support student behavioral crisis situations.
  • Maintain emotional control under stress.
  • Abide by state statutes, school board policies, and regulations.
  • Attend meetings and perform duties as assigned by administrators or supervisors.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation.
  • Serve on committees as assigned.
  • Participate in the evaluation and revision of behavior plans.
  • Provide research-based target interventions and monitor progress to support the integration of behavior supports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
