As the Behavior Specialist (Crisis Support) at Devereux Day Academy, you will work with other dedicated education professionals who share your passion for helping individuals in need. Due to expansion, we are searching for an additional Behavior Specialist (Crisis Support) in order to support our growing program! Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health New York provides programs and services for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and dual diagnoses. Located in Highland, NY, this position is responsible for preventing and responding to students in crisis. The Behavior Specialist (Crisis Support) role will provide crisis intervention and other assistance as needed to maintain safety and program integrity. The Behavior Specialists will provide support to students who need a higher level of care to participate in instruction as needed, and assist in implementation of skill acquisition and behavior support plans as directed. Under the direction of the classroom teacher, they will assist in training other staff in implementation. The Behavior Specialists (Crisis Support) will administer and implement behavior improvement programs recommended by administration and appraise the effectiveness of the program in meeting the students’ needs. In addition, they will advise staff on possible causes of student’s behavior and suggest methods of teaching alternative skills or modifying the environment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • At least one year’s experience with individuals with autism or other developmental disabilities.
  • Free of dependency and abuse of illegal or illicit drugs, inhalants or other chemical or controlled substances.
  • Significant, prolonged and frequent amounts of walking, standing, sitting, stooping, bending and lifting of 50 pounds or more.
  • Using standard crisis intervention procedures, must be able to singlehandedly effect the initial restraint of children and adolescents.
  • Possible exposure to blood borne pathogens.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s Degree in psychology, human services or related field preferred.

Responsibilities
