About The Position

This position coordinates efficient and timely patient flow, access and bed utilization 7 days a week at all Vancouver Acute sites. Collaborates and negotiates with external health care agencies regarding patient flow and access to and from Vancouver Acute sites. Provides cross-site leadership by guiding designated staff that facilitate timely patient flow and access. Responsible for assessing the efficiency and effectiveness of patient flow and access within applicable site(s) and surrounding regional and provincial centers. Uses strong communication skills to build relationships with external facilities and agencies to facilitate access to appropriate care for patients. Collaborates and negotiates with other health care facilities and BCBedline regarding access to beds and critical resources. Acts as a resource in resolving issues/problems regarding patient care staffing levels and bed utilization when there is difficulty in accessing critical resources for patient care; notifies the Managers, Patient Flow and Access or Patient Care Supervisor-Vancouver Acute (VA) of any actual or potential problems which may have safety, legal or media implications. Maintains communications with staff and physicians on issues relating to patient care staffing and patient flow, access and bed utilization. With the support of the Patient Care supervisors-VA and Program Managers, provides direction to Patient Care Coordinators and Charge Nurses with respect to patient flow and access decisions; negotiates, as necessary, when compromise and agreement cannot be reached. About the Psychiatric Assessment Unit (PAU) at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) The Psychiatric Assessment Unit at Vancouver General Hospital is a 14-bed short stay unit focused on clients who require short term, intensive treatment to return to their community, with length of stay being approximately three days. At PAU, Nurses support patients with their physical and mental health needs as well as day-to-day activities. The PAU team endeavors to provide a safe place that promotes acute psychiatric stabilization for patients in a comforting, caring and holistic environment.

Requirements

  • Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Three (3) years' recent, related experience in clinical area including one (1) year's recent, related experience in bed utilization and facilitation and one (1) year’s recent, related administrative/supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Nursing theory and practice within a patient/family centered model of care.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the BCCNM standards for nursing practice.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of other health care disciplines and their role in patient care.
  • Demonstrated ability to adjust to unexpected events, problem-solve, set priorities and deal with conflict.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems, make decisions and take action in a crisis management environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership, supervision, work direction and consultation.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach, demonstrate, facilitate and coach.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate (orally and in writing) and deal effectively with clients and their families, coworkers, physicians, other health care staff, and staff of external agencies.
  • Extensive knowledge of patient care protocols to assess the impact of decisions on patient safety.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt and be flexible to changing demands and environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize people and resources through change.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop educational programs, instructional material and evaluation tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated skill in clinical techniques and the use of applicable equipment and supplies.
  • Demonstrated skill in CPR techniques.
  • Demonstrated computer skills including ability to effectively use computerized client care information system and the Regional Bed Management System.
  • Demonstrated physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Ability to travel to other worksites for meetings as needed.
