About The Position

The BCT Laboratory Technologist position includes processing or assisting in the processing of cellular products. This may involve manipulation of cellular products including (but not limited to) product receipt and characterization, concentration, volume adjustment, cryopreservation, storage, thawing, and preparation of products for infusion. The BCT Laboratory Technologist is responsible for laboratory operations with strict adherence to applicable regulations and standards (e.g., cGTP, FACT, CAP, TJC). The BCT Laboratory Technologist will also share the role as the NMDP Transplant Coordinator. The BCT Laboratory Technologist will also participate in data analysis and Quality Assurance initiatives.

Requirements

• BS or BA in Biological Science, Medical Technology or a related field.
• Must be currently registered as a Medical Technologist (ASCP or equivalent), if applicable
• Minimum three years clinical laboratory experience (required)

Responsibilities

• Processes and/or assists in the processing of stem cells and other cellular products, following all appropriate policies and procedures, within the established time frames
• Processes all products, without direct supervision, from initial evaluation to finished product status, in an accurate and timely manner, using aseptic technique
• Reviews processing record for acceptability, accuracy, and completeness
• Correlates data based on clinical knowledge, technical expertise and other conditions affecting test results or process outcomes
• Performs patient and product identity verification for processing and/or infusion applications, to include receipt and inspection of cryopreserved HPC
• During transplant, transports and thaws cryopreserved HPC product and issues product to clinical staff
• Operates and performs maintenance on all Laboratory equipment following manufacturer recommendations and BCT Laboratory policy and procedure
• Accurately prepares appropriate documentation for processing and infusion records
• Reviews critical reagent and supply receipt, storage and applicable manufacturer certificate of analysis or conformity prior to use
• Performs critical calculations during processing to assess product yields
• Performs critical reagent and instrument quality control at the appropriate intervals, interprets, and correctly records results
• Utilizes reagents and supplies in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and/or standard operating procedures
• Participates in environmental monitoring procedures
• Performs and reports proficiency testing as required
• Participates in maintaining records to meet standards and/or requirements of the hospital and the licensing or accrediting agencies including, but not limited to FACT, FDA, CAP, and Joint Commission
• Reports occurrences to appropriate personnel, as instructed in the operating procedure, in a timely manner and assists in resolving them
• Performs preventative maintenance on instrumentation and equipment and maintains records of all maintenance performed
• Recognizes instrument malfunctions and initiates troubleshooting procedures
• Documents actions taken and resolution in a timely manner
• Coordinates cell collection and processing as well as hematology, flow cytometry, immunohematology, and microbiology testing as needed
• Assists in collection of data for audits
• Acquires continuing educational hours as required annually
• Serves as a NMDP Transplant Coordinator, communicating with NMDP representatives as well as appropriate BCT Program staff
• Operates and maintains skills related to computer applications for data capture and reporting
• Adheres to all applicable safety requirements in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures
• Writes reports, policies and procedures in a clear and detailed fashion, at the request of the Laboratory Supervisor
• Maintains compliance with all company policies, procedures and standards of conduct
• Complies with HIPAA privacy and security requirements to maintain confidentiality at all times
• Performs other duties as assigned
