About The Position

Ford Racing is seeking a Battery Modeling Engineer to apply battery chemistry, data analysis, and modeling to motorsports development. The role turns test results into physics-based models that can improve lap times and inform current and future battery systems. The engineer will work on a small, high-performing motorsports team with substantial ownership and a focus on rapid testing of ideas and continuous improvement. The position applies modeling expertise to Ford Racing’s current battery systems and helps set the direction for future modeling methods and battery designs. It supports Ford Racing production and motorsport vehicles through collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related field.
  • At least 2 years of direct experience modeling lithium-ion battery cells.
  • Competency in relevant engineering software, such as COMSOL, GT-Suite, Python, or MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Working knowledge of battery-cell test methods, chemistry, and key design parameters.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally as required.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States; visa sponsorship is not available.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with 3D heterogeneous chemistry modeling.
  • Hands-on experience producing lab-scale lithium-ion battery cells.
  • High Voltage Safety Training.
  • Competitive spirit and interest in professional motorsports.

Responsibilities

  • Build and refine electrochemical models using tools such as MATLAB and COMSOL to support future development and decisions about cell chemistry and format.
  • Build and refine thermal and equivalent circuit models using tools such as GT-Suite and Simulink to predict battery-cell performance under track conditions.
  • Work with array design engineers to shape cell integration into the battery array and inform cooling methods and heat-rejection designs for system efficiency.
  • Provide technical expertise to global internal and external stakeholders across Ford Racing production and motorsport vehicles.
  • Guide testing strategies so data needed for models are generated efficiently.
  • Define battery management system requirements related to cell state estimation, life, and operational efficiency.

Benefits

  • Immediate medical, dental, vision, and prescription drug coverage.
  • Flexible family care days, paid parental leave, new-parent ramp-up programs, and subsidized backup child care.
  • Family-building benefits, including adoption and surrogacy expense reimbursement and fertility treatments.
  • Vehicle discount program for employees and family members, and management leases.
