Battery Lab Test Systems Engineer

General Motors•Warren, MI
•Onsite

About The Position

The Battery Lab Test Systems Engineer is part of General Motors’ Lab System Integration Engineering (LSIE) team, a central engineering resource group supporting battery, component, and propulsion test laboratories and vehicle garages. This role directly supports the Global Battery Systems Lab (GBSL), Wallace Battery Cell Innovation Center (WBCIC), and Root Cause Warranty Center (RWC) at the Warren Technical Center in Michigan. The position manages the software ecosystem that enables safe and efficient laboratory testing, including test cell workstation builds and configurations, LSIE’s test automation toolchain, operational applications, metrics systems, data interfaces, and Windows-based test PCs. The engineer provisions and manages test-system fleets, deploys software, coordinates environment changes, maintains configuration and change records, and helps standardize the use of enterprise toolchains across the supported sites. The role connects enterprise platforms with daily lab operations and supports more than 100 battery test beds. It requires close collaboration with lab operations, LSIE, Computer Aided Testing, DevOps engineers, and IT. This is an onsite position at the Warren Technical Center, with weekend or off-shift support for planned changes and high-priority software issues.

  • B.S.E. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • High level of interest in the vehicle electrification space.
  • 2–7 years of software engineering, DevOps, or backend systems experience supporting a production or test environment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in at least one high-level programming language, such as C, C++, C#, Java, or Python.
  • Experience supporting Windows-based test or production PCs in an enterprise or lab environment, including application installation and configuration.
  • Experience with modern source control and CI/CD tooling, such as Git/GitHub and build and deployment pipelines.
  • Proven ability to build automation or internal tools that improve software deployment, configuration management, or environment reliability.
  • Ability to work independently in a complex environment while managing multiple projects with clear priorities and deliverables.

Nice To Haves

  • M.S.E. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Battery systems product development, test lab, or test automation experience.
  • Experience administering or supporting test automation systems such as A&D iTest, AVL Lynx, LabView, TestStand, or Veristand.

  • Experience planning and executing software environment migrations in production or test environments, such as source control platform changes, license server updates, or large-scale OS or application upgrades.
  • Experience automating and managing fleets of lab or test PCs using tools such as Baramundi or Ansible, including standard images, configuration baselines, and operational runbooks.
  • Experience partnering with central IT or infrastructure teams in a large enterprise to implement local solutions aligned with enterprise standards.

Responsibilities

  • Support testing PC builds, software configuration, and deployments across GBSL, WBCIC, and RWC in partnership with DevOps engineers.
  • Maintain software environments on critical test PCs by coordinating OS and security updates with IT and managing LSIE-owned applications and configurations.
  • Own lifecycle management for key test systems, including version control, compatibility planning, environment upgrades, and major platform migrations.
  • Own the metrics pipeline for lab test systems across Influx, Telegraf, Grafana, and test automation systems.
  • Support and maintain LSIE’s test automation toolchain used in daily lab operations at GBSL, WBCIC, and RWC.
  • Maintain software change logs, configuration records, runbooks, and standard test PC images to support traceability, audit readiness, and root-cause analysis.
  • Serve as the technical bridge between LSIE, Computer Aided Testing (CAT), and IT for infrastructure decisions affecting the test environment.
  • Evaluate, pilot, and implement tools from relevant teams to meet site needs.
  • Standardize software support approaches, toolchains, and configurations across GBSL, WBCIC, and RWC to reduce redundant local solutions.
  • Provide advanced troubleshooting and escalation support for software issues affecting test execution, working with LSIE application engineers, lab operations, CAT, and IT.
  • Plan and execute complex lab software and infrastructure changes, including source control or license migrations, environment upgrades, and enterprise-driven changes.
  • Support weekend or off-shift needs for planned changes and high-priority software issues.
