About The Position

Join a progressive, proactive Fire/EMS department that is a family friendly, employee first agency. Help lead a talented group of full-time Firefighter-EMTs and Paramedics, who are well trained and equipped to provide a wide variety of emergency medical care, risk reduction initiatives, and critical incident response. The City of Maplewood is seeking a Battalion Chief due to a promotion. Responsible for proactively leading daily operations, strategic coordination, and supervisory oversite of fire suppression, EMS, training, and community risk reduction. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in fire science, public administration or a related field or ability to obtain within 30 months from hire date.
  • Current State of Minnesota Firefighter License as recognized by the Minnesota Board of Firefighter Training and Education, or ability to obtain prior to date of hire, and must maintain licensure thereafter.
  • Current certification as a Paramedic in the State of Minnesota.
  • Five years of work experience as a full-time Firefighter
  • Three years of previous experience in a leadership position.
  • Certified Emergency Manager by the State of Minnesota within three years of hire.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Minnesota driver's license or equivalent out-of-state license.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s Degree in fire science, public administration or a related field.
  • Completion of credentialing process through the Commission on Professional Credentialing and Center for Public Safety Excellence (Fire Officer, Fire Marshal, Chief Training Officer, Chief Fire Officer, Chief EMS Officer) or equivalent
  • Completion of significant studies from the National Fire Academy with a focus in leadership, incident and program management.
  • Fluent in a second language spoken in Maplewood (Hmong, Spanish, Karen, etc.)

Responsibilities

  • Responds to emergencies and performs duties in alignment with department and industry standards, including EMS, fire suppression, rescue, investigation, prevention, education, and command functions.
  • Assumes Incident Command at emergency scenes, managing personnel and resources to ensure life safety, property conservation, and incident stabilization.
  • Coordinates fire department operations with internal city departments and external jurisdictions to ensure effective communication and seamless service delivery.
  • Supervises personnel during emergency and non-emergency operations, ensuring alignment with guidelines, standards, and staffing levels.
  • Schedules personnel, authorizes overtime to meet shift minimums, and leads post-incident reviews and After-Action discussions.
  • Responds to public inquiries and complaints; investigates concerns and recommends corrective action as needed.
  • Manages records within the department’s Records Management System (RMS), ensuring accuracy, confidentiality, and regulatory compliance.
  • Provides strategic leadership to align department operations with organizational values, mission, and goals.
  • Promotes effective communication and collaboration across all levels of the department and with external partners.
  • Oversees training programs, performance standards, safety practices, and department quality assurance initiatives.
  • Participates in budget preparation and fiscal management; authorizes expenditures in accordance with budget guidelines and financial management policies.
  • Leads and manages special projects and department initiatives as assigned by command staff.
  • Fosters positive, professional relationships with coworkers, city employees, and the public using principles of exceptional service, a culture that supports and empowers people and strong relationships.
  • Plans and directs staffing and scheduling to ensure efficient use of personnel and equipment.
  • Oversees training efforts and supports continuous development of department staff.
  • Conducts performance evaluations, coaching, disciplinary investigations, and prepares documentation consistent with department standards.
  • Enforces city and department policies, rules, and labor agreements while promoting a positive workplace culture.
  • Represents the department on committees, task forces, and public engagements as assigned.
  • Builds and maintains strong working relationships with mutual aid partners, external agencies, and community stakeholders.
  • Serves as liaison for joint operations, planning efforts, and cooperative service delivery.
  • Performs Public Information Officer (PIO) duties when requested to support media relations and public communication.
  • Actively supports and enhances the department’s image and community reputation through engagement and professionalism.
  • Embodies and promotes the City's core values in all actions and decisions.
