About The Position

The Cy-Fair Fire Department is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Battalion Chief – Suppression Training to provide leadership, strategic oversight, and instructional expertise in the development and delivery of comprehensive fire suppression training. This position is critical to maintaining operational readiness, regulatory compliance, and professional excellence across all suppression personnel. Reporting to the Assistant Chief – Suppression , the Battalion Chief – Suppression Training will lead by example, uphold the highest standards of professionalism, and ensure that training programs effectively prepare personnel for safe, efficient, and effective emergency response. The rank of Battalion Chief is classified as a full-time non-exempt position.

Requirements

  • Minimum 18 years of age.
  • Minimum eight (8) years of experience as a career firefighter or ten (10) years active participation as a volunteer firefighter with an organized fire department.
  • Associate’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Fire Science, Emergency Medicine, Education, Public Administration, Behavioral Science, or a related field.
  • TCFP Advanced Structure Firefighter.
  • TCFP Fire Officer II Certification.
  • TCFP Instructor III Certification.
  • Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS) EMT.
  • Completion of NIMS ICS-100, 200, 700, and 800 (ICS-300 and 400 preferred).
  • Valid Texas Class B (or higher) driver’s license, or ability to obtain within thirty (30) days of appointment.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with department personnel, partner agencies, and the public.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, administer, and evaluate comprehensive fire suppression training curricula and instructional materials.
  • Coordinate and oversee continuing education programs and certification training for suppression personnel.
  • Supervise and evaluate the training progression of all new hires and transitional employees throughout all phases of the training process.
  • Ensure compliance with Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) and State Firefighters’ and Fire Marshals’ Association (SFFMA) policies, standards, and recordkeeping requirements.
  • Maintain, track, and audit training records and certification renewals for all certified suppression personnel.
  • Participate in daily training activities and coordinate joint training initiatives with surrounding fire departments and training institutions.
  • Serve as a liaison with state, federal, and local agencies, training institutions, and professional organizations for training-related matters.
  • Provide instruction and subject-matter expertise in fire suppression training as requested or operationally necessary.
  • Evaluate learner performance, provide feedback, and develop remediation and performance improvement plans as needed.
  • Assist with test development, validation, and exam rationales to ensure fair and accurate assessment.
  • Support personnel in pursuing advanced education, certifications, and professional development opportunities.
  • Remain current on fire service research, training methodologies, educational best practices, and regulatory updates.
  • Exercise sound judgment, independent decision-making, and collaborative problem-solving skills in a dynamic training environment.
