About The Position

This role involves supervising student-athletes as assigned by the head coach, adhering to the Gadsden Independent School District’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include promoting sports participation, treating student-athletes professionally, and maintaining loyalty to the school and Head Coach. The position emphasizes developing a competitive program that excels in athletic performance, classroom achievement, and community expectations, while fostering an environment for academic and athletic success. The coach is expected to monitor academic performance, enforce the "Code of Ethics," teach sportsmanship, and set an example of good moral and physical behavior. The role requires assuming responsibility for the conduct and well-being of all players, conducting oneself in a manner that brings credit to the individual, team, and school, and developing open communication with participants, teachers, administrators, and parents. Loyalty and trustworthiness to student-athletes, team, head coach, school, and district rules are paramount. The coach must be familiar with and follow the policies and guidelines of the Gadsden Independent School District and the New Mexico Activities Association, including knowing and adhering to district and state eligibility and transfer rules. Ensuring "RankOne" clearance from the trainer before an athlete participates is also required. Professional responsibilities include reporting inappropriate behavior, attending professional meetings and clinics, and working with administrators to upgrade the athletic program. Teamwork involves cooperating with the Head Coach and other coaches, and encouraging athletes to participate in other sports. Program development includes participating in off-season and summer programs and promoting programs involving middle and elementary school students. Methods and strategies involve adhering to the Head Coach's direction, instructing participants on safety and injury reporting, implementing technical coaching strategies, and employing sound teaching skills and techniques, with an emphasis on innovation. Management functions include securing facilities after use, supervising locker rooms, ensuring proper use of uniforms and equipment, cooperating with the head trainer on injuries, following fundraising guidelines, and complying with all local, state, and federal rules and regulations.

Requirements

Must complete the New Mexico Activities Association’s online course requirements for coaching.
CPR Certification
Valid New Mexico coaching license
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Ability to speak effectively before groups of students or employees of an organization.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Maintains emotional control under stress.

Responsibilities

Supervises student-athletes as assigned by the head coach in accordance with the Gadsden Independent School District’s policies and applicable laws.
Adherence to the Gadsden Independent School District rules, regulations, and Athletic Philosophy.
Promoting and encouraging students to participate in sports.
Treating student-athletes in a professional manner in conjunction with the athletic coordinator and principal.
Is loyal to the school and Head Coach.
Gives priority to the professional performance, duties and responsibilities of classroom instruction (if a classroom teacher).
Sets and defines high levels of competitiveness, expectations, and character development.
Encourages students to participate in the athletic program and individualized sport.
Assists Head Coach in developing a competitive program that will excel in athletic performance and competition, classroom achievement, and community expectations.
Creates an environment whereby athletes can achieve academic and athletic success.
Ensures our athletes that they will be given every opportunity to achieve competitive success.
Monitors academic performance to ensure the student-athlete is enjoying academic success.
Enforces the “Code of Ethics” for all athletes.
Teaches sportsmanship and sets an example of good moral and physical behavior.
Assumes responsibility for the conduct and well-being for all players.
Conducts oneself in a manner both on and off the field that will bring credit to yourself, your team, and your school.
Develops an open-line of communication with participants, teachers, administrators, and parents.
Is loyal and trustworthy to the student athletes, team, head coach, school, and Gadsden Independent School District Rules and Guidelines.
Is familiar with and follows the policies and guidelines of the Gadsden Independent School District and the New Mexico Activities Association.
Knows district and state eligibility and transfer rules and follows them to the letter.
Ensures that an athlete does not participate until the head coach receives a “RankOne” clearance from the trainer.
Reports inappropriate behavior of any athletic personnel or participant to the Campus Principal and Athletic Coordinator.
Attends professional meetings and clinics.
Works continually with the Principal, Athletic Director, Athletic Coordinator, and Head Coach to upgrade the total athletic program.
Cooperates with and is responsive to the needs of the Head Coach and other coaches and their athletic programs.
Encourages athletes to participate in other sports.
Participates in an off-season and summer program to give our student-athletes a better opportunity to improve their skills – if not coaching another sport.
Promotes and supports athletic programs that involve middle school and elementary school students.
Adheres to, supports, and provides input according to direction of the Head Coach.
Instruction to participants in safety-related issues and the need for reporting injuries to the trainer.
Implementation of coaching strategies that represent technical knowledge and reflect the ability to create, utilize or react to different game situations.
Use of coaching methods and techniques that represent an up-to-date philosophy, the ability to analyze and correct errors, and the employment of sound teaching skills and techniques.
Innovative in using new coaching techniques and ideas.
Secures facilities after use; i.e. locker room, equipment room, showers, lights, building, etc.
Supervises the locker room before and after each practice until all players have left.
Assures that school purchased uniforms and equipment are used only for athletic contests.
Uniforms and equipment are to be worn and used only for school practices and games.
Cooperates with the decision of the head trainer on injury situations.
Follows the Gadsden Independent School District guidelines for fundraising.
Agrees to fulfill performance responsibilities in location(s) assigned.
Complies with local, state and federal rules and regulations.
Performs such other tasks as may be assigned within the parameters of the job analysis.
