A Barista is an integral member of the Barnes & Noble Café team, welcoming customers, helping them choose beverages and café items, operating registers, and maintaining an attractive, clean, efficiently run Café. The role includes stocking deliveries, maintaining the bake case and dining area, preparing food and drinks, and supporting the bookfloor team when needed. Baristas are expected to provide cheerful, professional customer service and to work reliably, flexibly, positively, and supportively with colleagues. Baristas learn and perform operational tasks including using registers and other technology, merchandising café products and retail fixtures, receiving and stocking deliveries, following First In First Out (FIFO) and product dating practices, completing cleaning tasks, and following café safety, hygiene, and sanitation procedures. They also follow loss-prevention procedures and use de-escalation techniques, seeking support when issues arise. The work involves prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting, and substantial walking. Employees may be asked to work in other stores when able and needed to support the wider Cluster. As their knowledge develops, Baristas build familiarity with beverage, bakery, savory, and gifting products; maintain appealing displays; share information about promotions and new items; recommend food and beverage customizations; and support café retail options. They are expected to use café training tools and comply with company policies and procedures. With demonstrated mastery of the role’s skills, Baristas are expected to advance to Senior Barista.
