About The Position

A Barnes & Noble Barista welcomes customers, answers questions, and helps them choose beverages and café items. The role supports the café team by maintaining an attractive, clean presentation, stocking deliveries, tidying the bakery case and dining area, and operating registers efficiently and professionally. Baristas are expected to demonstrate reliable attendance, flexibility in responding to store scheduling needs, a positive and helpful approach to work and colleagues, cheerful customer service, and willingness to learn and enjoy the work. Baristas are trained to use café technology and tools, maintain merchandising and visual presentation, process transactions, receive and stock deliveries, prepare food and drinks accurately, complete cleaning tasks, follow FIFO and product-dating practices, and support the bookfloor team when needed. The position also involves following loss-prevention procedures and using de-escalation techniques. The work is physically active, including prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting, and extensive walking. Employees may work in other stores when able and when needed to support the wider Cluster. As they gain experience, Baristas build knowledge of café products, promotions, customization recommendations, retail options, training tools, and café safety, hygiene, and sanitation standards. With mastery of the role’s skills, Baristas are expected to advance to Senior Barista. Employees must comply with company policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

Welcome customers, answer questions, and help them select beverages and café items.
Maintain an attractive, clean café presentation, including the counter, floor retail fixtures, bakery case, and dining area.
Unpack and stock deliveries accurately and efficiently.
Operate registers quickly, competently, and reliably.
Prepare food and drinks accurately using product knowledge, recipe guides, product specification sheets, and other tools.
Complete daily and weekly café cleaning tasks and follow safety, hygiene, and sanitation procedures.
Follow First In First Out (FIFO) practices and date products consistently and correctly.
Support the bookfloor team when needed.
Follow loss-prevention procedures, identify theft or problematic behavior, and seek support or use de-escalation techniques as appropriate.
Build knowledge of beverage, bakery, savory, gifting, and café retail products and use it to support presentation, sales objectives, promotions, and customer recommendations.
Use café training tools appropriately and support the success of key products and promotions.
Comply with company policies and procedures.
Support other stores in the wider Cluster when able and needed.
