About The Position

Addison Community Schools is seeking a highly qualified, student-centered Band Director to lead and develop a comprehensive instrumental music program for students in grades 5-12. The successful candidate will provide engaging instruction, foster musical growth, direct performances, and promote a positive culture of excellence within the band program. The Band Director will be responsible for elementary students in grade 5, middle school, and high school band instruction, performances, festivals, concerts, marching band, and other music-related activities that support student achievement and community engagement.

Requirements

  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate.
  • Appropriate Michigan Music endorsement (K-12 Music – JQ or equivalent approved endorsement).
  • Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institution.
  • Successful completion of a state-approved teacher preparation program.
  • Passage of required Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) examinations for music certification.
  • Ability to pass criminal history and background checks as required by Michigan law.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of instrumental music instruction, performance techniques, and student development.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver standards-based band instruction aligned with Michigan Academic Standards for Arts Education.
  • Develop lesson plans that address varying student skill levels and learning styles.
  • Assess and monitor student progress through formative and summative assessments.
  • Maintain accurate records of student achievement and attendance.
  • Create a positive, safe, and inclusive learning environment.
  • Differentiate instructions to meet individual student needs.
  • Direct 5th grade, middle school and high school concert bands.
  • Organize and conduct rehearsals, performances, concerts, festivals, and adjudicated events.
  • Recruit and retain students in the instrumental music program.
  • Assist students in developing individual and ensemble performance skills.
  • Coordinate instrument inventories, maintenance, and equipment needs.
  • Develop annual program goals and improvement plans.
  • Direct marching band and pep band.
  • Supervise students during performances, trips, and extracurricular activities.
  • Coordinate transportation, scheduling, and logistics for performances and competitions.
  • Ensure compliance with district policies and student conduct expectations.
  • Maintain regular communication with students, parents, staff, and administration.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to support student success and district initiatives.
  • Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and district committees.
  • Foster positive community relationships through music performances and outreach.
  • Maintain all required certifications and professional credentials.
  • Comply with district policies, collective bargaining agreements, and state and federal regulations.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, ethical conduct, and continuous professional growth.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by administration.
