About The Position

The Band Director/Asst. Band Director is responsible for developing in each student an appreciation for music, teaching music expression techniques, discovering and developing student talents in music, and fostering knowledge and skills in music listening and reading. This role involves planning and implementing various concerts, marching practices, and performances, including football games and PEP band activities. The position also includes preparing students for auditions and participation in various music competitions and festivals, such as Junior Clinic, Senior Clinic, All Region, All State Bands, and ASBOA concert contests. Additionally, the director will oversee solo and ensemble contests, participate in district-sponsored music activities, and engage in professional development through in-service and professional meetings. Responsibilities extend to elementary school recruitment, concerts, and cooperation with parents and patrons. The role also requires supervision of students at band-sponsored activities and support for the district's desegregation commitment in minority recruitment. Significant time outside regular school hours is expected for rehearsals, practices, and performances.

Requirements

  • Certified in Instrumental Music 125 (K-12) OR Instrumental Music 205 (PK - 8) AND Instrumental Music 206 (7 - 12).

Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement at least one evening or Sunday community concert the first semester and a minimum of two the second semester.
  • Plan and implement senior high marching practices and limited Junior High marching.
  • Hold individual or group combined rehearsals and practices outside the regular school hours.
  • Perform at all home football games and a minimum of one away game.
  • Schedule senior high home conference game "PEP" band activities in a manner that does not conflict with student's concert and/or regional contest preparation.
  • Prepare students for auditions and participation in Junior Clinic, Senior Clinic, and All Region and All State Bands.
  • Audition students for All Region and All State Bands when needed (All State - high school teachers only).
  • Prepare bands for Arkansas School Band and Orchestra Association (ASBOA) concert contests.
  • Budget time so that all students will have the opportunity of entering solo and/or ensemble contests.
  • Participate in and prepare students for participation in Pulaski County Special School District sponsored music activities (Honors Band, etc.).
  • Meet and participate in area or district wide in-service meetings.
  • Participate in professional meetings such as those sponsored by ASBOA and ABA.
  • Participate in Baccalaureate and/or Commencement Services.
  • The junior high director is responsible for concerts, demonstrations, orientations, and recruiting in area elementary schools.
  • The high school director and the Director of Activities will aid in recruiting procedures for parents and potential beginning instrumental music students.
  • Elementary concerts should be scheduled throughout the year and recruiting completed by March 1.
  • Meet with and cooperate with interested parents and patrons.
  • Supervise students at all band-sponsored activities.
  • Support the Pulaski County Special School District desegregation commitment in the recruitment of minorities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
