About The Position

Graphic Packaging International is a leading manufacturer of paper-based packaging for various industries. They are seeking candidates to join their Chicago, IL team for the position of Baler Operator. This role is part of a succession program designed to prepare employees for advancement to Cutting Operator, with a potential career path of Baler Aerator Cutting Operator. Requirements

  • Must speak, read, and write in English.
  • No experience needed.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Ability to work alternate schedules and overtime, which may include early mornings, nights, and/or weekends.
  • Punctuality is essential.
  • Willingness and ability to work overtime.
  • Ability to push loaded dumpsters onto stands when elevated.
  • Ability to lift barrels of scrap onto the conveyor belt (full barrels weigh up to 45 lbs).
  • Visual acuity to see the end of the conveyer belt clearly (up to 30 ft) to spot congestions.
  • Physical coordination to operate a forklift.
  • Ability to work in inside conditions with extremes of heat (summer), humidity, and noise (from forklift and production machinery).
  • Follow all Plant rules, Processes, Hygiene, and Allergens procedures related to the production of Safe Quality Foods.
  • Report potentially unsafe conditions that may result in unsafe foods or noncompliance to SQF related procedures.
  • Participate in SQF Root Cause and Corrective Actions as required.
  • Follow all procedures related to producing Safe Quality Foods (SQF).
  • Report any potentially unsafe SQF conditions or customer complaints to a person of authority.
  • Accepting this position means entering a role that is part of a defined Succession Program.
  • Demonstrate continuous growth and readiness to advance to the next level (Baler Aerator Cutting Operator).
  • Complete required training, meet performance standards, and accept promotional movement when selected.
  • Shift Flexibility Requirement: Advancement may require transitioning to the night shift.
  • A refusal or inability to transition to the night shift when required will result in disqualification from the Succession Program.

Nice To Haves

  • Some Departments/Jobs may run a M-F 8-hour Shift Schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Loading bale machine with paper scrap and tying up condensed scrap.
  • Loading paper scrap onto the conveyor belt of the bale machine using a crane to position and tilt dumpsters.
  • Spreading scrap along the belt to prevent machine congestion.
  • Wrapping baled scrap with metal straps, fastening and tightening them with a stretcher.
  • Weighing bales of scrap and filling out inventory tags with grade and weight information.
  • Stacking bales according to grade using a forklift.
  • Loading bales onto trailer beds for shipping using a forklift.
