About The Position

Leads the Bakery department and staff, overseeing financial stewardship, customer service, department conditions, merchandising, food safety, work safety, communication, hiring, training, and performance management. The role involves providing exceptional customer service and fostering a positive, collaborative team environment. The manager ensures the department delivers an outstanding customer shopping experience with high levels of service and product knowledge. This is a management position responsible for leadership aligned with company values of equity, inclusiveness, and promoting a positive and progressive work environment in accordance with the company's mission, vision, values, and policies.

Requirements

  • Previous customer service, food service, retail, or grocery experience required.
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
  • Knowledge of and experience working with bread including baking artisan bread products, pastry, and coffee/tea products in a café or retail environment required.
  • Previous experience with ordering/inventory management required.
  • Previous supervisory or management experience required.
  • Intermediate level experience with MS Office.
  • Skills to manage financial results, including labor, sales, and profit margin.
  • Must complete and maintain all required food and work safety trainings and/or certifications.
  • Works a schedule that is informed by the needs of the business and may be subject to change seasonally or due to varying staffing needs and demonstrates reliable and predictable attendance.
  • Shifts tasks as priorities and circumstances change based on needs and conditions of department and whole store as needed.

  • Working knowledge with POS, inventory or other retail specific software and ability to learn new technology/software preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and provide oversight to all areas of the department, assessing, prioritizing, and delegating tasks and production.
  • Ensure consistency of department conditions, including stocking, rotation, facing, and adherence to merchandising standards and category schematics.
  • Responsible for satisfactory in-stock conditions in the department and maintaining appropriate inventory levels to achieve sales and margin goals.
  • Address quality, consistency, and production issues.
  • Order bakery and pastry products according to anticipated sales and seasonal needs, training staff to write orders consistent with department goals.
  • Plan for weekly ads, events, and holidays using tools and reports.
  • Build displays and arrange department products for attractive presentations, highlighting featured/unique/seasonal items.
  • Produce bakery products in accordance with company and regulatory agency standards.
  • Demonstrate understanding of labor, sales, and margin goals and develop plans to meet them.
  • Maintain professional vendor relationships.
  • Oversee beverage programs, ensuring quality and consistency, and prepare coffee and other beverages to specifications.
  • Coordinate slicing, weighing, packaging, and labeling of finished products.
  • Ensure customer special orders are accurately placed and delivered.
  • Receive and unload merchandise, checking quality, count, and condition.
  • Stock and rotate products with attention to product quality and expiration dates.
  • Maintain the organization, rotation, and cleanliness of back stock areas.
  • Ensure compliance with organic standards.
  • Stock, rotate, and merchandise bakery and pastry products.
  • Plan, lead, and analyze the monthly perishable inventory.
  • Share product knowledge with customers and staff, making recommendations based on customer needs and establishing consistent communication programs.
  • Demonstrate ability to multi-task and manage own time, adjusting priorities, productivity, efficiency, and speed as needed.
  • Directly manage all department staff, including performance management, review writing, scheduling, and providing ongoing training, coaching, development, and feedback.
  • Establish and maintain effective verbal and written communication systems.
  • Perform other tasks and duties as assigned.
