About The Position

The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) is seeking a Baggage System Operator for two term opportunities, ending October 31, 2027, and December 31, 2028. This role is responsible for the efficient operation of the Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 Baggage handling systems and ensuring all processes and SOPs within Baggage Services are executed successfully at Toronto Pearson. The position will assist with maintaining the flow of inbound, outbound and connecting baggage and provide field-level oversight and support to airlines, ground handlers and passengers. This is a unionized position classified at the Band 5 level.

Requirements

  • High school diploma.
  • Minimum one (1) years of customer service experience.
  • Valid Ontario ‘G’ class Driver’s license.
  • Ability to obtain a “D/A” level Airside Vehicle Operator’s.
  • Ability to obtain and retain a Transportation Security Clearance.
  • Ability to lift objects up to 35 kilograms and work in restrictive spaces, as well as undertake strenuous activities such as climbing ladders, lifting, bending, pulling, and pushing.
  • Ability to operate tools and equipment.
  • Ability to multitask and make decisions that support the inbound and outbound flow of baggage and airline performance.
  • Ability to be adaptable and demonstrate a mature, resourceful approach when dealing with conflict and high-pressure situations.
  • Competence in data entry and report creation.
  • Ability to influence airline and ground handler decisions to facilitate a higher level of service and overall performance.
  • Ability to learn various types of baggage system equipment with varying complexities from different vendors (e.g., Alstef, Vanderlande, WEBB, Beumer, and DSG).
  • Knowledge of computer applications (e.g., MS Office applications, SmartSuite Enterprise, and applied SAC and SCADA systems).
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to interpret airline schedules and baggage data.
  • Understanding of ITD, BIWIS, ITT, and baggage-related programs and processes, including contingencies and regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to multitask within time constraints and make decisions that support the inbound and outbound flow of baggage and airline performance.
  • Knowledge of the baggage flow process at Pearson Airport.
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to work rotational shift schedules.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in an airport environment is considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor the T1 and T3 Baggage Handling System (BHS) and clear baggage jams and faults as required.
  • Monitor and respond to radio call-outs from the Control Room.
  • Be responsible for the monitoring and operation of all SSBD, SAC, and SCADA processes.
  • Provide oversight of bag rooms and roadway management, including induction points and BIWIS, ITD, and Connections.
  • Monitor baggage inbound/outbound lateral and carousel allocations and ensure efficiency of planned allocations.
  • Perform field-level monitoring of ITD, BIWIS, and other baggage program-related processes and baggage flow.
  • Ensure timely tub stock at SSBDs, departure levels, inbound, and connection induction areas to support efficient baggage hygiene needs.
  • Conduct T1 and T3 BHS inspections, including Foreign Object Debris (FOD) inspections and removal.
  • Liaise with the CATSA Point Leader on the status of equipment and processing times at HBS and recon rooms.
  • Liaise with various partners, including ground handlers and airlines, and respond to baggage operational situations that may cause disruption to baggage flow and/or damage to BHS equipment.
  • Provide oversight of third-party contractors (Manual Encode operations, ITT, Common Handler).
  • Conduct Service Level Agreement audits as they relate to baggage operations.
  • Configure conveyors at the field level in the event of a breakdown, system congestion, or to improve flow efficiency.
  • Implement and oversee baggage-related IRROPS plans and contingencies on a field-level basis.
