About The Position

To ensure live poultry have been humanely killed by automated equipment and have been properly bled while in compliance with Animal Welfare standards. This role involves verifying automated killing and bleeding processes, and manually performing incisions when necessary to meet Company, U.S.D.A., and Animal Welfare standards. The position also requires notifying management of equipment issues, participating actively in team initiatives, and understanding Simmons Operating systems principles. The Backup Killer performs other duties as necessary to support business objectives and is expected to be adaptable and creative within their role.

Requirements

  • Regularly required to stand, reach and move about the facility.
  • Light to moderate physical effort required.
  • Occasional walking, twisting at the neck, reaching at or below shoulder level, lifting / carrying of up to 35 pounds.
  • Frequent bending and twisting at the waist, power grasping.
  • Constant standing, bending at the neck, grasping, repetition of shoulders, arms and hands, use of talking, vision and hearing.
  • Exposure to dust, gas, fumes.
  • Operation of foot controls or repetitive foot movements.
  • Inside line work.
  • Production area includes loud equipment/machinery, walking around grates, hoses, foot baths, wet/humid environment, exposure to dust, fumes, heat over 80 degrees, cold below 45 degrees.
  • Will use, hearing protection, gloves, apron, chain guard, hair net(s), stanatizable shoes, eye protection and other protective equipment as needed or required.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred experience in shipping and receiving, working with large moving equipment.
  • Preference for poultry or food processing organization.

Responsibilities

  • Verifies that all poultry has been killed and bled properly by automated equipment.
  • Manually places incision on birds not killed by automated equipment by cutting from jawbone to jawbone to conform to Company, U.S.D.A., and Animal Welfare standards.
  • Responsible for notifying management if equipment in the department is not operating properly.
  • Participates as a member of the Team.
  • Participates in ongoing development, communication and implementation of team concepts, programs and policies; coordinates work to ensure B.E.S.T practices with all team members.
  • Attends appropriate team meetings.
  • Fosters strong cohesiveness regarding all major issues; e.g., direction, annual plan, budget, policy changes, etc.
  • Accepts responsibility to quickly identify any areas that lack cohesiveness, bringing them to the attention of the team leader and working with the team in a supportive manner to resolve issues and actively look for ways, and reinforces actions needed, to achieve synergy possible within the larger organization.
  • Is familiar with Simmons’ established operating systems (e.g. quality, security, office environment, company policies); understands the responsibility to maintain familiarity with the systems and this position’s role in support of these systems - including a consideration of the impact of individual actions on the systems and the responsibility to communicate concerns and improvement ideas.
  • Performs other duties as necessary in support of business objectives.
