About The Position

American Track is hiring an hourly-rated skilled craft worker for construction and maintenance projects. Backhoe operators perform a variety of tasks as project workflows require, including operating backhoes and other heavy construction equipment. The successful applicant will also be trained to operate specialty railroad machinery, including a Tamper machine and Ballast Regulator, and is expected to work as both a backhoe operator and an on-track machine operator. Some travel and weekend work should be expected. This is an evergreen posting used to collect applications for future openings; candidates whose qualifications align with future needs may be contacted as opportunities become available.

Requirements

• At least 1 year of experience operating a backhoe.
• Ability and willingness to be trained and to train others on the machine.

• Experience in a railroad construction environment.

Responsibilities

• Operate all machinery safely.
• Set up heavy construction equipment.
• Perform proper pre-start and daily maintenance, including lubrication and required documentation.
• Keep equipment clean and well-maintained and perform required maintenance.
• Operate equipment to grade or redistribute earth and to move, load, or unload material.
• Install equipment or attachments on machinery or related structures.
• Signal directions or warnings to coworkers.
• Coordinate machine actions with other activities and position or move loads in response to hand or audio signals from crew members.
• Locate underground services, such as pipes and wires, before beginning work.
• Study instructions, plans, and diagrams to establish work requirements.
• Meet grade plan requirements and set grade standards.
• Demonstrate the ability to lead a crew and delegate work within the work scope.
• Understand production and quantity requirements.
• Make decisions based on verifiable standards.
• Perform incidental work items and duties included within other crafts, including operating on-track machinery.
• Assist crews with necessary labor as needed.
• Be willing to receive training and train others on the machine.
• Travel and work weekends as required.
