About The Position

The Backhoe/Heavy Equipment Operator operates a tractor-driven hydraulic digging machine, performing necessary working adjustments, minor maintenance, and repairs. This role also involves operating heavier equipment and undertaking various other cemetery tasks as assigned. As an employee of the Archdiocese, conduct is expected to align with the goals and mission of the Roman Catholic Church.

Requirements

  • Class “A” License required for driving heavy duty equipment
  • General education sufficient to understand and observe written and oral instructions, directions, and safety rules.
  • Two years' experience in cemetery grounds care, operation.
  • Courses or training in operation of heavy equipment, lawn maintenance, landscaping, basic mechanics, and equipment operation.
  • Knowledge of basic English language usage.
  • Knowledge of application of training in procedures and safety practices relative to interments/entombments and disinterment's/disentombments.
  • Knowledge of excavating, hauling, dumping, edging and trimming equipment operation and repair.
  • Knowledge of lawn, grounds, and equipment maintenance.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations.
  • Skill in training, coaching, and directing the work of others.
  • Skill in maintaining positive public relations with patrons, funeral directors, priests, and vendors.
  • Skill in safe and efficient use of required machinery and equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to plan and complete jobs on own initiative.
  • Ability to train, assign and delegate workload, as needed.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects and equipment.
  • Ability to handle grave set-ups, tins and sod carefully.
  • Ability to dig and backfill graves, transport vaults and layout graves on own after initial instruction from supervisor/Assistant Supervisor.
  • Lift objects weighing a minimum of 50 pounds unassisted and be able to lift heavier objects with the aid of other grounds workers.
  • Sit for sustained periods of time on a daily basis.
  • Perform tasks requiring intermittent bending, stooping and walking.
  • Sustain frequent movement of the fingers, wrists, hands, waist and arms.

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate heavy equipment, including the backhoe, mower, sweeper, trimmer, dump truck, or other cemetery equipment.
  • Ensure equipment is clean and maintained in good operating condition for safety.
  • Set up graves for interment services, seal vaults, backfill and tamp graves, and replace sod.
  • Trim all memorials and monuments on cemetery grounds.
  • Set up tents as necessary; handle and store dirt sheets and greens.
  • Mow, edge, and sweep lawns.
  • Remove flowers and care for vases.
  • Prune, fertilize, and water the grounds.
  • Care for flowerbeds and areas around buildings.
  • Raise graves and memorials, and level lawns.
  • Clean office and perform janitorial maintenance.
  • Gather and remove trash.
  • Act as a funeral attendant; assist priests, patrons, and funeral directors as necessary.
  • May train other ground workers and is responsible for the safe and careful handling of all cemetery property and equipment, ensuring its proper use and security.
  • Inform Manager/Supervisor of needed maintenance or repairs to equipment or buildings and submit monthly inspection reports.
  • Perform other minor maintenance work.
  • Evaluate and recommend the need for equipment and sprinkler system maintenance and repairs.
  • Maintain accurate records and reports and inventories of all supplies and submit them to Manager/Supervisor monthly.
  • Maintain good personal appearance and conduct oneself in a manner befitting funerals and respect for the dead.
  • Follow, enforce, and maintain safety rules and regulations.
  • May instruct other grounds personnel in cemetery safety procedures and policies; maintain accurate records and a safe work environment.
  • Maintain cooperative and positive work relationships with management and co-workers.
  • May assist a Manager/Supervisor in reviewing and evaluating other grounds personnel.
  • Work with management to accommodate special circumstances with patrons.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
