About The Position

The Backhaul Fleet Specialist is responsible for maximizing utilization and profitability of dedicated fleet operations by identifying, securing, and executing backhaul opportunities. This role sits at the intersection of operations, procurement, and network optimization—ensuring trucks minimize empty miles while improving revenue, service, and cost efficiency. This individual will work cross-functionally with fleet operations, brokerage, pricing, and customer teams to design and execute backhaul strategies that enhance overall fleet performance. This role is critical to unlocking the full value of dedicated fleets—transforming them from static cost centers into dynamic, revenue-generating network assets. By reducing empty miles and improving utilization, the Backhaul Fleet Specialist directly impacts profitability, sustainability (CO₂ reduction), and customer value.

Requirements

At least 2 years of experience in transportation, logistics, or fleet operations
Understanding of dedicated fleet operations, routing, and backhaul strategies
Experience with TMS platforms (e.g., Blue Yonder, Oracle, SAP TM, McLeod, etc.)
Analytical mindset with ability to interpret lane, cost, and utilization data
Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills

Nice To Haves

Dedicated fleet or asset-based transportation experience
Exposure to optimization models (continuous moves, roundtrips, consolidation)
Experience in chemical, bulk, or specialized transportation environments
Familiarity with gainshare or performance-based pricing models

Responsibilities

Identify and secure backhaul freight to reduce empty miles across dedicated fleets
Build and manage a pipeline of backhaul opportunities using internal network data, TMS, and market intelligence
Collaborate with operations teams to align backhaul opportunities with driver HOS, routes, and service commitments
Execute daily/weekly backhaul planning to ensure consistent fleet utilization
Analyze lane data, fleet positioning, and customer networks to uncover optimization opportunities
Partner with optimization teams to integrate multi-shipper consolidation opportunities where applicable
Balance service, cost, and revenue trade-offs when selecting backhaul freight
Coordinate with strategic carriers and internal brokerage teams to source backhaul loads
Partner with customers to identify compatible freight flows for continuous moves and roundtrip optimization
Support dedicated fleet customers with reporting on utilization, cost savings, and service improvements
Drive incremental revenue through backhaul capture and improved asset utilization
Track KPIs including empty miles %, revenue per truck, revenue per mile, and backhaul yield
Support gainshare and cost-saving models tied to backhaul performance
Leverage TMS and optimization tools to plan, tender, and track backhaul movements
Ensure accurate execution, visibility, and billing of backhaul loads
Continuously improve processes to scale backhaul programs across fleets
