About The Position

Under general supervision, to conduct background investigations and document findings of employee candidates; to perform a variety of duties involved in the enforcement of laws and the prevention of crimes; to conduct and participate in general investigations of crimes, accidents, and cases; to control traffic flow and enforce State and local traffic regulations; and to perform a variety of technical and administrative tasks in support of the Department.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Two years of college desirable.
  • Five years of police investigative experience.
  • Valid Utah Driver’s License
  • Knowledge of personnel law and requirements of background investigations.
  • Knowledge of functions and objectives of Federal, State, and other local law enforcement agencies.
  • Knowledge of basic principles of criminal law.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of community policing.
  • Knowledge of safe driving principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of modern investigative methods including interviewing and interrogation techniques.
  • Knowledge of modern police methods and procedures related to patrol, apprehension, arrest, search and seizure, traffic control, and investigation and identification techniques.
  • Knowledge of law enforcement theory, principles and practices and their application to a wide variety of services and programs.
  • Skill with interviewing persons with information regarding background of candidates.
  • Skill with safely carrying an issued firearm and qualify as per department policy.
  • Skill with operating other modern police equipment.
  • Skill with operating modern office equipment including computer equipment and software.
  • Skill with operating a motor vehicle safely.
  • Ability to navigate local geography, city streets, public buildings, and businesses.
  • Ability to learn recent court decisions and how they affect department and division operations, especially in the area of personnel law.
  • Ability to learn self-defense tactics.
  • Ability to learn, properly interpret and make decisions in accordance with Federal, State and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations particularly with reference to apprehension, arrest, search and seizure, evidence and records maintenance, and traffic control.
  • Ability to learn to gather, assemble, analyze, evaluate and use facts and evidence.
  • Ability to learn, interpret and explain City and Department policies and procedures.
  • Ability to observe accurately and remember names, faces, numbers, incidents and places.
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise reports.
  • Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively and determine proper course of action.
  • Ability to act quickly and calmly in emergencies.
  • Ability to meet and deal with the public tactfully and effectively.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity in response to changing situations and needs.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct extensive background investigations on candidates for various employment positions.
  • Conduct skilled contact interviews with applicants and references.
  • Contact, cooperate, and coordinate information exchange with other law enforcement agencies, employers and organizations in matters relating to background investigations.
  • Prepare written reports documenting findings of background investigations.
  • Maintain contact with citizens regarding potential law enforcement problems and preserve good relationships with the public; take an active role in areas of public education relative to crime and crime prevention.
  • Participate in training courses and programs.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
