About The Position

Ether.fi is seeking a strong engineer to join their credit card transaction team. The role will focus on improving the credit card program and its associated risk systems. Key responsibilities include enhancing the transaction stack by identifying and resolving user friction points caused by transaction declines, and strengthening fraud and risk defenses by making them proactive. This involves building rules, monitoring systems, and internal tooling, as well as actively investigating cases, analyzing attacker methods, and implementing preventative measures. The engineer will collaborate with Product, CX, and Compliance teams, as well as external card program and fraud vendors.

Requirements

  • Strong fundamentals in software engineering and problem solving.
  • 4+ years of professional coding experience, with a track record of shipping products.
  • Product sense; a focus on user experience and proactive problem-solving.
  • Comfortable digging into data by querying it directly.
  • Genuine interest in adversarial problems and identifying patterns in data.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in fintech, neobank, card issuer, or issuer processor environments.
  • Experience on the card issuing side or with a card transaction processor.
  • Knowledge of card and payment fraud mechanics (card testing, BIN attacks, friendly fraud, merchant collusion, cashback farming).
  • Experience building on a fraud decisioning or transaction monitoring platform and operating it.
  • Experience conducting fraud investigations or disputes personally.

Responsibilities

  • Improve the card transaction experience by identifying and eliminating causes of declines, failed authorizations, and stuck holds.
  • Enhance the card program as a product by identifying user issues, proposing solutions, and implementing fixes.
  • Identify and combat fraud and abuse patterns such as card testing, cashback farming, merchant abuse, friendly fraud, trial and force-post abuse, and multi-account rings.
  • Manage the fraud stack, including rules, queues, and scoring logic in Sardine, along with real-time monitoring, alerting, and automated mitigation.
  • Conduct hands-on investigations of live cases, querying transaction data, identifying root causes, and proposing rules or controls to prevent recurrence.
  • Develop internal tools, dashboards, and scripts to improve the effectiveness of risk and CX teams.
