Backend Engineer

Matternet•Mountain View, CA
•$160,000 - $205,000

About The Position

Matternet is building autonomous drone networks to deliver critical goods faster, cleaner, and at lower cost, working with partners in healthcare, logistics, food, and retail. The Backend Engineer will join the platform team building the cloud platform for the next-generation M3 aircraft. This hands-on role involves building and owning well-scoped services and pipelines, collaborating with senior engineers on design, and growing toward ownership of larger platform components over time. The work spans Node.js/TypeScript services and APIs, flight and telemetry data pipelines, and tooling used by the aircraft program in a safety-critical environment. The role includes building and maintaining backend services and APIs that integrate M3 aircraft into delivery operations; building and extending pipelines for M3 flight, vehicle, and telemetry data; writing tested, observable, maintainable code and participating in code reviews; deploying, monitoring, and debugging production services; triaging production and field issues and escalating as needed; and collaborating with onboard software, operations, product, and safety teams.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years building and operating production backend systems.
  • Backend proficiency in Node.js/TypeScript, or a comparable modern language with the ability to ramp up quickly.
  • Solid fundamentals in API design, relational databases, and data modeling.
  • Working experience with cloud infrastructure, containers, and CI/CD.
  • Strong debugging instincts and a sense of ownership for code running in production.
  • Clear communication skills and eagerness to seek out and apply feedback.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with fleet management, IoT/telemetry, or robotics systems.
  • Familiarity with event streaming or real-time messaging.
  • Experience building with NestJS.
  • Exposure to hardware-software integration or new device bring-up.
  • UAV, aerospace, logistics, or other operationally critical domain experience.
  • Experience using AI coding assistants to accelerate development.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain backend services and APIs that integrate the M3 aircraft into delivery operations.
  • Build and extend data pipelines that ingest and process M3 flight, vehicle, and telemetry data.
  • Write well-tested, observable, maintainable code and participate actively in code reviews.
  • Deploy, monitor, and debug services in production.
  • Provide technical support by triaging production and field issues and escalating when needed.
  • Collaborate with onboard software, operations, product, and safety teams.
