About The Position

Quilter is seeking a Backend Engineer to join our File I/O Team. This group integrates Quilter with the world’s leading PCB CAD vendors—such as Altium, Cadence Allegro, Siemens Xpedition, and Zuken. You’ll design and maintain the critical bridges that let engineers move seamlessly between Quilter and existing CAD environments. In this role, you’ll combine deep backend engineering skills with the ability to quickly learn new technical domains—from parsing and generating complex CAD formats to managing Quilter’s internal “board” model. As a senior member of the team, you’ll shape technical direction, mentor others, and own high-impact projects end-to-end.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience as a software engineer, with significant time in backend roles.
  • Expert-level proficiency in Python (required) and modern backend frameworks.
  • Proven experience leading complex integration projects or working with large/ambiguous data models.
  • Strong system design skills, including API design and distributed system reliability.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills, with a track record of cross-functional influence.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-moving, high-ownership startup environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with PCB design workflows or EDA/CAD systems.
  • Experience working with large-scale data serialization formats (XML, JSON, protobuf).
  • Exposure to hardware projects (embedded systems, Arduino, PCB tinkering).
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform).
  • Open-source contributions in developer tooling, CAD, or simulation software.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design and development of integrations with CAD vendors’ scripting systems and file formats.
  • Define and extend Quilter’s internal PCB representation for compatibility across tools.
  • Build robust APIs and backend services to abstract away CAD complexity for downstream teams.
  • Collaborate with ML, EDA, and electrical engineering experts to ensure seamless interoperability.
  • Provide technical leadership on architecture, testing, and best practices.
  • Mentor junior engineers and help shape the culture of the File I/O team.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and equity benefits
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Regular team events and offsites (~4x / year)
  • Unlimited paid time off
  • Paid parental leave
