Backend Engineer

Integrate•Seattle, WA

About The Position

Integrate is hiring a Backend Engineer to join a small, high-ownership engineering team building and scaling the infrastructure layer of its real-time project management platform. The role focuses on distributed-system performance, data federation at scale, and architecture that can support a growing customer base. The engineer will work closely with other engineers and collaborate with platform engineers and technical leads on infrastructure decisions. The position involves designing high-throughput distributed backend systems, profiling and debugging Go and Rust services, contributing to data federation and downstream data services, and evolving gRPC and REST/JSON interfaces. The role also works with SQL and NoSQL data stores and includes production observability, on-call responsibilities, root-cause analysis, and incident follow-through. The primary language is Go, with Python used for tooling and data workflows. The broader technology stack includes gRPC, REST/JSON, GraphQL, PostgreSQL, NoSQL stores, Kubernetes, and Terraform. This role requires US person status because it involves access to information protected under US export control laws, including ITAR and/or EAR.

Requirements

  • 2–5+ years of backend engineering experience, focused on distributed or high-availability systems.
  • Production experience in Go; experience with Python for tooling or data workflows.
  • Familiarity with gRPC and REST/JSON API design at scale.
  • Experience with SQL (PostgreSQL) and NoSQL data stores in production.
  • Experience using Kubernetes in real environments, including deployment, scaling, resource management, and debugging.
  • Exposure to cloud infrastructure such as AWS, GCP, or Azure, particularly compute, storage, and data services.
  • A track record of complex system work, such as monolith-to-microservice transitions, cloud migrations, data pipelines, or consumer-scale workloads.
  • Strong debugging skills, including the ability to read a flame graph, find bottlenecks, and ship fixes.
  • US person status (US citizen, US permanent resident, individual granted US asylum status, or individual admitted in US refugee status) is required for access to export-controlled information.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with gRPC design patterns, binary serialization, or API gateway-layer GraphQL.
  • Terraform or other infrastructure-as-code tooling experience.
  • Experience with load testing or chaos engineering.
  • Background in ecommerce, fintech, or other consumer-scale SaaS.

Responsibilities

  • Design and scale distributed backend systems handling high-throughput, real-time data across a complex dependency graph.
  • Profile and debug Go and Rust services, identify bottlenecks, and implement fixes.
  • Contribute to the data federation architecture, including S3 integration, graduation pipelines, and downstream data services.
  • Build and evolve gRPC service interfaces and REST/JSON APIs for internal and external users.
  • Work across SQL and NoSQL data stores, including schema design, query optimization, and durability patterns.
  • Collaborate with platform engineers and technical leads on infrastructure decisions.
  • Instrument, observe, and debug production systems; participate in on-call, root-cause analysis, and incident follow-through.

Benefits

  • Strong benefits
  • Real ownership
