Backend Engineer, Integrations

Pinwheel•New York, NY
•$115,000 - $140,000•Hybrid

About The Position

Pinwheel is building the next generation of financial products alongside major brands like Robinhood, DoorDash, and American Express. The Integrations Platform (IP) team is responsible for the services, primitives, and tooling that enable over 1800 integrations to function at scale. This includes managing proxy systems, browser automation, identity flows, session handling, and the runtime environment for Integrations Engineers. The company is seeking a mid-level Backend Engineer to take ownership of platform projects from conception to operation, improve reliability and performance, and contribute to broader systems ownership. This role is hands-on and operates within a small, high-leverage team. Pinwheel is a hybrid environment with a 3-day in-office requirement in their NYC headquarters.

Requirements

  • 3-5 years of backend integrations engineering experience building production services
  • Computer Science degree or equivalent practical experience
  • Strong Python skills (or comparable language with a clear path to ramping on Python 3.10+)
  • Production operations experience, including on-call rotation, debugging incidents, and shipping fixes under pressure
  • Working knowledge of AWS, with experience in at least one of DynamoDB, S3, IAM, ECR, and understanding of operational aspects like latency, retries, and throttling
  • Solid systems-design fundamentals, including the ability to scope small services, reason about failure modes, and defend tradeoffs in design reviews
  • Experience meaningfully integrating AI-assisted engineering (e.g., Claude Code, Copilot, agentic tooling) into a workflow
  • Comfort with concurrency and async patterns such as threads, gevents/greenlets, async/await, or equivalent

Nice To Haves

  • Browser automation experience with Selenium, CDP (Chrome DevTools Protocol), or Playwright
  • Experience with browser fingerprinting, including TLS fingerprinting (JA3), header/User-Agent analysis, captcha challenges (Turnstile, reCAPTCHA, Arkose), and residential or datacenter proxy management
  • Working knowledge of identity protocols such as OAuth2, SAML, OIDC, and MFA orchestration (Okta, Microsoft Entra, PingOne, Duo, ID.me)
  • Experience with FastAPI, Redis, Celery, or gRPC in production
  • Experience in fintech, payroll, or other regulated environments

Responsibilities

  • Own platform projects end-to-end, from scoping and design review through shipping and operation
  • Engage in scraping engineering and research-heavy projects, including reverse engineering integrations, scrapers, and automation against systems that are constantly changing.
  • Ship reliability and performance improvements to shared infrastructure, including proxy management, browser fleet, on-prem infrastructure, session/state management, and latency-sensitive AWS code paths.
  • Improve the standards for Integration Engineers through shared libraries, custom lint rules, internal tooling, and code reviews.
  • Apply AI-assisted workflows thoughtfully to personal work and to the tooling used by other engineers.
  • Operate the platform in production, including participating in the on-call rotation, triaging incidents, writing postmortems, and implementing preventative fixes.
  • Maintain dependency and security hygiene, including addressing CodeQL findings, CVE remediation, and TLS/crypto updates.

Benefits

  • Great compensation & equity packages
  • Full medical, dental, and vision benefits
  • Life & short-term disability insurance
  • Flexible PTO policy that prioritizes recharge and balance
  • Paid parental leave
  • 401K for retirement planning
  • Mentorship opportunities
