About The Position

Under the supervision of the Operations Manager or Shift Supervisor, the Back-Up Operator is responsible for supporting operations across the Powder Coating Line, including Pretreatment & Wastewater, Powder Coating, and Quality. This role provides interim coverage during breaks, absences, and vacations, ensuring safe, efficient production while maintaining quality and environmental standards.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Prior manufacturing or powder coating experience preferred.
  • Ability to learn and operate multiple processes and equipment.
  • Basic computer skills for data entry and tracking.
  • Strong attention to detail and communication skills.
  • Flexibility to support varying shifts and operational needs.

Responsibilities

  • Attend and participate in all required company training programs.
  • Operate machinery or stations as instructed by supervision to meet scheduled demands.
  • Maintain accurate records of production, waste, and quality checks.
  • Operate coating equipment including guns, hoppers, reclaim systems, and booth collection systems.
  • Apply powder coating using automated and manual processes while maintaining quality standards.
  • Monitor coating quality pre-cure and make adjustments to reduce defects and downtime.
  • Support start-up, shut-down, changeovers, and troubleshooting processes.
  • Maintain proper cleaning and care of coating equipment.
  • Perform quality inspections using visual checks and testing equipment (e.g., thickness gauge, gloss meter).
  • Communicate quality concerns promptly to operators and supervisors.
  • Support containment and product hold processes for out-of-spec material.
  • Monitor and ensure adherence to established quality standards and specifications.
  • Operate pretreatment and wastewater systems including tanks, pumps, RO systems, and filtration equipment.
  • Monitor chemical levels, pH balance, and water quality to meet regulatory requirements.
  • Respond to out-of-spec conditions and notify appropriate personnel immediately.
  • Ensure proper preparation and cleanliness of parts prior to coating.
  • Follow all Company, OSHA, and EPA policies and procedures.
  • Ensure safe work practices and encourage safe behavior in others.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
  • Report any safety or environmental incidents promptly.
  • Maintain a high level of customer focus without compromising safety or environmental standards.
  • Troubleshoot process issues within scope and escalate when necessary.
  • Support standard work processes including start-up, shutdown, changeovers, and troubleshooting.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce waste and improve efficiency without sacrificing quality or safety.
