The Back Office Technician is responsible for performing a variety of patient care, office, and laboratory duties. The Back Office Technician prepares patients for examination and assists other optical professionals in providing treatment to the eyes. This role ensures a positive and professional environment where patients feel comfortable; prepares patients for treatment and assists doctors. The technician collects and documents the patient’s chief complaint, verifies patient’s ocular and medical health history, and documents any medications the patient is taking. They obtain and ensure patients read and sign consents. Key clinical duties include performing Refractions, basic Visual Acuity (VA) assessments, intraocular pressure (IOP) tests with a Tonopen unit, taking Fundus photos, administering a Visual Field (VF) test, performing Flourescein Angiogram (FA) procedures, and performing Indocyanine Green Angiography (ICG) procedures. The technician also administers topical ophthalmic and dilation medications to patients. Administrative duties include maintaining clean and stocked exam rooms, providing written instructions and patient education materials, ensuring patient understanding of instructions, providing accurate documentation and summarization of ocular examinations while maintaining patient flow, and filing patient forms and updating information in the CareCoud/EMR system. In some clinics, driving patients in a company-provided vehicle may be required. The role demands maintaining an appropriate professional appearance and demeanor, keeping commitments, informing supervisors of work progress, and maintaining strict compliance with State, Federal, and other regulations (e.g., OSHA, WC, HIPAA, ADA, FEHA, DOL, HR policies and practices). Other duties may be assigned by management.
