About The Position

The Back End Application Developer contributes to the design, development, and maintenance of server-side components for digital platforms, including event-driven services, web applications, and APIs. The role applies foundational programming skills to solve technical problems and help ensure back-end systems run smoothly and integrate effectively with other platform components. The developer works with senior engineers, front-end developers, and technical stakeholders to improve performance, reliability, scalability, security, and maintainability. This position is located at the company’s Cleveland Headquarters office and is not hybrid or remote. It is not eligible for work-authorization sponsorship now or in the future. Candidates must be at least 18 years old and legally authorized to work in the country of employment without requiring current or future employment-visa sponsorship. The role involves contact with employees and access to confidential or proprietary information; the company states that a review of criminal history is necessary to protect its business, operations, reputation, staff, and business relationships.

Requirements

At least 2 years of back-end application development or engineering experience.
Good programming skills in back-end languages such as Java, Python, or Ruby.
Familiarity with back-end frameworks.
Moderate understanding of web protocols.
Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Ability to work collaboratively and cross-functionally with technical stakeholders.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, IT, or a related field, or at least 3 years of application development or application engineering experience in lieu of a degree.
Must be at least 18 years old.
Must be legally authorized to work in the country of employment without now or in the future requiring employment-visa sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

Experience designing and integrating generative AI and computer vision models in production, such as image segmentation, diffusion, or vision-language models, including practical knowledge of prompt and output engineering, model evaluation, and managing cost, latency, and accuracy tradeoffs at scale.
Familiarity with back-end service development in Java using Spring Boot or a similar framework, ideally including experience building or maintaining shared platform services used by multiple downstream applications.
Ability to design clean, well-documented APIs for use by other teams.
Experience with production AI/ML inference operations, including GPU versus CPU tradeoffs, model-serving frameworks, caching and batching strategies, monitoring for model drift or degraded output quality, and security and data-handling considerations.

Responsibilities

Analyze back-end architecture, implement proposed optimizations, and verify their impact on system performance.
Write, review, and optimize code in collaboration with senior engineers to ensure it is reliable, reusable, scalable, and secure.
Design and implement integration solutions and help maintain application functionality and scalability with senior team members and front-end developers.
Support discussions with technology leaders to understand business and technical requirements and priorities for back-end systems.
Update status and task completion at each stage and assist in monitoring the performance and health of services, databases, and other components.
Help troubleshoot and debug complex application and database system issues.
Stay informed about relevant industry trends and emerging technologies, expand knowledge, and share insights with the team.
Gather input and recommend ideas for planning, designing, and conducting unit tests and other quality-assurance measures.
Support senior team members in training digital platform users on best practices for maintaining web applications and APIs.
Create and refine detailed documentation, apply best practices, and communicate design and implementation clearly under the guidance of experienced team members.
