Walden University adjunct faculty members educate students by using online technology and resources to deliver knowledge, information, feedback, and critique through thoughtful, well-written, timely communication. They are expected to foster a respectful learning environment and adhere to the university’s faculty expectations. The role includes course instruction, course content development, curricular activities, academic advising and mentoring, promoting a professional social work identity, and engagement in scholarship. Faculty may also provide residency instruction; part-time contributing faculty may be invited to residencies but are not required to attend. Faculty teach through the Learning Management System and interact with students in the online classroom. Classrooms are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Faculty are expected to be present in the classroom at least four days per week and respond to student questions within 48 hours. Regular, predictable availability is encouraged, and online office hours may be required under program or college policy. New faculty receive training in online teaching, the learning platform, university and program policies, academic integrity assessment, and research supervision. Teaching and mentoring assignments depend on successful completion of required training. Candidates must hold an earned doctorate in Social Work, Human Services, or a related field, as well as an MSW from a CSWE-accredited program. At least two years of post-graduate practice experience is required. Three to five years of undergraduate or graduate teaching experience, as appropriate to the program, is preferred. Experience in distance education and commitment to supporting students’ learning and development in an online environment are also preferred. Faculty must maintain applicable licenses and certifications and keep current with research.
