About The Position

The B Mechanic, under the direction of the Shop Supervisor, is responsible for performing a variety of duties on Alexandria Transit Company’s (ATC) fleet vehicles, ranging from routine maintenance to specialized repairs. This role operates on a second or third shift and has a starting hourly salary of $30.97. The position involves journeyman-level repairs, maintenance, and modifications on all DASH vehicles and related equipment. The B Mechanic must be able to read and understand diagnostic, repair, and service procedure manuals to apply this knowledge to repair tasks. Frequent use of laptops and related technology is required for vehicle diagnosis and scheduled maintenance. Upon completing repairs, the B Mechanic will test drive vehicles to ensure proper performance and completeness of the repair.

Requirements

  • Possess a complete set of mechanic tools.
  • Must be proficient in the use of computers.
  • Knowledge of electrical wiring fundamentals.
  • Ability to read manuals and schematics.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to make independent decisions within scope of responsibility.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum two (2) years of vehicle maintenance or mechanic experience required.
  • Possesses or ability to obtain a Class B (Passenger and Air-Brake endorsement) Commercial Driver’s License with P endorsement within 60 days of hire.
  • Must successfully complete and pass: criminal background and child protective services check upon hire and must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Must successfully complete and pass drug screen testing upon hire and as regularly required by policy for position.

Nice To Haves

  • Relevant technical school training is beneficial but not required.
  • Diesel mechanic experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs all levels of Preventative Maintenance Inspection on all DASH vehicles.
  • Performs all levels of unscheduled repairs on all DASH vehicles, diagnosing equipment for proper repairs.
  • Requests and orders required parts for repairs and maintenance.
  • Opens work-orders for all repairs or services / inspections.
  • Test drives vehicles for verification of proper operation prior to and upon completion of repairs.
  • Follows established procedures / OEM procedures for all maintenance/repairs.
  • Works independently while performing job duties.
  • Reads and understands repair manuals.
  • Reads and understands wiring schematics.
  • Uses computers daily for work-orders and looking up equipment.
  • Assists other mechanics when necessary.
  • Uses hand tools, pneumatic tools and hydraulic tools including ancillary shop equipment daily.
  • Makes road calls or service calls.
  • Performs related tasks and duties as required.
